Message from Mrs. Rach
One of the Habits of Mind that we focus and reflect on as a school is persistence. This quarter, we are spending more time learning about ways people have/can persist and persevere. As a school, we’ve talked about falling into the “Learning Pit”. The Learning Pit is an analogy for learning that represents a challenge. Taking on a challenge is like getting into a pit- we may feel uncertain at first; while we’re in “the pit” it takes effort and productive struggle to climb out.

Today during our school-wide Cushing News Network announcements, we watched this video about persistence. Feel free to review the video (which is one of three in a series we will watch) with your child and talk about ways that they might have experienced productive struggle while in “the dip” or “the pit”.

**LAST CALL** Lost & Found
Please check out our Lost & Found gallery on our Facebook Page. Anything unclaimed will be donated after school TODAY.

WANTED: Paper Towel & Toilet Paper Tubes
Our students will be designing, building a prototype, and making a marble run this month. This activity will also give us an opportunity to further discuss Habits of Mind like collaboration and persistence. You can imagine that we will need lots of paper towel and toilet paper tubes for this activity. If you have any saved up, please send in with your students or you can drop them off on the tables in Front Lobby by April 26th. Thanks!

Light It Up Blue - Friday, April 30
Cushing will Light it Up Blue, on Friday, April 30th, for Autism Acceptance Month. Please encourage your student to wear something blue that day in honor of Autism Acceptance.

Water Bottles
Please remind your student(s) to bring their water bottle to school every day. Our random supply of paper cups is running low.

Class Placement for Next Year
The teams at Cushing take time to carefully balance all classrooms for the next school year. They take gender, behavior, academics, and special needs into account. If you have thoughts you would like us to consider about your child that we don’t already know, please complete THIS FORM. Form(s) need to be submitted by April 22 for your information to be considered.

Please know that we put a great deal of thought into these class placements and specific teacher requests will be disregarded.
Summer Academy Offers New Format - Sign-Up Begins April 12
KMSD will offer a face-to-face Summer Academy beginning in June, 2021. District mitigation strategies, family cooperation and desire suggest a face-to-face program is best for our Kettle Moraine community. District staff and attending students will continue with appropriate mitigation strategies including hand-washing, hand-sanitizing, and face coverings.

Elementary students will be grouped in cohorts by grade level or grade-band, similar to classrooms this year. Middle school students will have the opportunity to register for themed pathways in a face-to-face environment and high school credit courses will continue to run much the same as in the past.

Fun Facts for 2021:
  • June 21- July 30 (no 7/5)
  • 8am-12:35pm
  • In person plus online options for grades 6-12
  • Grades 5k-8 will be in cohorts

Message from the Health Room
There has been some confusion about PCR vs. antigen testing for COVID-19.

  • If a child stays home OR has been sent home with symptoms of COVID-19 and you wish to have them tested, KMSD requires a negative PCR test, which follows the CDC and Waukesha County guidelines for schools. This is for children with symptoms.

  • Not every doctor’s office automatically does PCR testing. Please verify the type of testing before having it done.

  • Documented proof of a negative PCR test is required before a child is allowed back in the classroom along with the child being symptom free for at least 24 hours without the use of medication.

Feel free to email our Health Room Staff: Susan Wilson ([email protected]) and/or Becky Chiang ([email protected]) or call the COVID-19 RN or Health Hotline if you have any questions.
