Filament Wound Tubes from The Gund Company
What is Filament Winding?
Filament winding is a composite manufacturing process which uses roving or continuous fiber to build strength around a shape. Depending on the application requirements, fiber diameter, orientations, and number of plys can be customized for optimal performance.
Aerospace and Defense Applications
  • Antenna Masts
  • Missile Canisters
  • Structural Beams and Boom Tubes
  • Actuator Shafts
  • Struts
  • Other Custom Shapes
Advantages of Filament Wound Composite Tubes
In the aerospace industry, aluminum and steel tubes have been used in the past for their strength properties. However, customization, cost consideration, and often longevity can cause a system to perform at a lower than optimal level.
Many of the drawbacks experienced with metal tubes are solved with composites, specifically filament wound tubes.
  • Provides weight savings
  • Can be manufactured to custom shapes
  • Does not corrode
  • Can be repaired to increase useful life
  • Can be RF transparent
