Spring 2022

In this edition you will:

  • get detail about a custom walnut and steel stair project
  • learn why design is important to a remodel success
  • learn about a garage to Accessory Dwelling Unit conversion
  • get a recent customer testimonial and more
At the start of the project, we installed dust protection to protect the expansive, open-concept home. We laid down low-residue protection mats onto the existing walnut flooring. Then, we saved the lower section of the existing stairs for the children to get back to their bedrooms by allowing them to slide in and out of place. This project started during the COVID lockdown, so virtual learning was going on past the other side of the dust protection.

Thoughts from our owner:
As a full-service remodeling contractor who believes in the design-build process, I find it interesting when homeowners tell me they don’t need design. As the owner of Shirey Home Pro, I have made this mistake on a few smaller remodel projects, and each time I regretted that decision.

So, let’s say you want to remodel or do some “minor update” to your bathroom with no design. We could bring in our technician from our service division, have him discuss your project with you that morning, and get started based on your instructions. He could work as many hours as it takes to complete your project. We would be winging it and could run into obstacles that didn’t get anticipated by flushing them out during the design process. “Fail to Plan – Plan to Fail” .

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are becoming more popular than ever for multiple reasons. Over the last few years, some municipalities have made it easier for homeowners to install ADUs. For example, Seattle’s Mayor, Jenny Durkan, signed legislation in 2019 to remove regulatory barriers and make it easier for property owners to create ADUs in Seattle’s single-family zones. Seattle has ten pre-approved plans that they claim the permitting department only needs 30 days to approve to issue a permit..

Jennifer V. states:

Rich is the head carpenter on our remodel. Not only is he a master carpenter, incredibly skilled, he also seamlessly juggles scheduling of subcontractors, is a great listener and communicates well, and is just generally a class act. You should consider yourself lucky to have Rich remodel one square inch of your home.
