Hello from the CEO!
Gregory D. Johnson
Customer Service & Community

It has been very busy here at Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority. First we held a very successful grand opening for West Union Square. The grand opening celebration took place at the Colerain Township site with more than 150 people attending three special events that were held. Partners, residents, staff, community members, legislators and many others joined us as we officially opened the doors to the newest development serving seniors 55 and older. The Hamilton County Commissioners proclaimed September 7, 2018 to be West Union Square Day. Barry Roberts from the HUD Regional Office joined us and said, "West Union Square is a national model to show how housing authorities and public/private partnerships can make a difference in neighborhoods." This senior development also helped stabilize a troubled part of Colerain Township and created over $2 million in wages. More highlights from the West Union Square events are featured below.

Also, we have given away thousands of books to residents over the past two years. It is very important to encourage and promote self-sufficiency for our younger population, so recently we held a special book giveaway at a West End school. CMHA along with our partners Book Rich Environments and The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County distributed thousands of fun, adventurous and educational books for children ages 4 through 18. Inspiring children to read brings a smile to my face and reminds me that the many partnerships we form really make a difference for our families. Further information and photos are in the "CMHA Beyond Housing" story.

CMHA customers are not just the residents we serve, they also include business partners, the community-at-large and ourselves. The management and executive staff participated in special training geared towards improving customer service. Customer service goes beyond how we treat external people it also includes how we treat each other. The team providing the training was very knowledgeable and provided stimulating exercises to empower staff, to identify challenges and to help address the fear of change some may be experiencing. The ultimate goal is to improve customer service at CMHA and all of us received the tools needed to move forward. We are ever striving to be a leader in the housing industry and moments like these coupled with commitment to improving customer service ensure that we are moving in the right direction.   Thank you to all the staff, partners and residents who played a part in one or all of these events.

Kind Regards,

Beyondhousing    CMHA Beyond Housing: Inspiring A Love of Books
The Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority often goes beyond housing to promote self-sufficiency among the residents served by the agency. The partnerships formed with multiple agencies help us to achieve that part of our Mission. Book Rich Environments (BRE) and The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County have been working with CMHA to inspire a love of books and reading by providing thousands of free books to Hamilton County families. On September 14, 2018 the three agencies joined together to provide the 900 students at Cincinnati College Prep Academy with children's books. Students in grades K through 12 went home with nearly 3000 books that Friday.
The high school students also learned about the Dare to Read Initiative. CMHA CEO Gregory Johnson invited them to participate in Dare to Read and the winners will receive a cash prize. CMHA's Family Self-Sufficiency staff is also partnering with The Public Library on a workshop called "Get to Know Your Public Library" where everyone is invited to attend and learn how great of a resource the library is for all families. More information about that October 10th event and other events can be found on the CMHA website calendar.

AgencyspotlightAgency Spotlight:  The Housing Choice Voucher Program
The Housing Choice Voucher Program provides a subsidy to a private landlord that helps bridge the gap between what a family can afford to pay in rent, and the actual market rent. Our HCV program can provide housing assistance to over 11,600 low to moderate income families; including children, Veterans, the elderly and the disabled. Every year the HCV Program undergoes an evaluation known as SEMAP or the Section Eight Management Assessment Program. HUD annually assigns each housing authority an overall performance rating of high, standard or troubled. CMHA earned a high performer status for 2018. The HCV Program made payments totaling nearly $71 million to property owners during fiscal year 2018. Several enhancements to CMHA's HCV Program have recently been implemented. Many of the changes were born from communication held with property owners and managers.

  • The RTA Express or the accelerated Request for Tenancy Approval process is in operation from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday through Thursday. Approved RTAs will be scheduled for inspection, whenever possible, within one to two business days of submission.
  • Marketing Mondays is a weekly event where landlords showcase available units to new voucher holders and current families looking to find new homes.
  • HCV On the Go The Landlord Outreach Coordinator conducts special property owner training for property owners and managers interested in providing affordable housing for voucher holders.
More information about the HCV Program can be found on the CMHA website or by calling the Customer Service line at (513) 977-5800.
