Research &Engineering
Center for Assurance Research and Engineering

(CARE) is a research center focusing on cybersecurity, housed in the Volgenau School of Engineering

CARE is focusing on the following initiatives:

  • City / County Cybersecurity Partnership: This NSF sponsored project aims at enhancing local government cybersecurity capacity through partnerships and sharing across local jurisdictions.

  • Cybersecurity on Enterprise Risk and Mobile Security: This NSA granted curriculum development project focuses on two security areas: Enterprise Risk and Mobile Security.

  • Extreme DDoS Defense (CD3) DARPA’s Extreme DDoS Defense (XD3): program focuses on areas of opportunity to improve resilience against DDoS attacks.

  • LADS Project: This project aims to enhance the cybersecurity of digital devices, such as Embedded and Mission‐Specific Devices (EMSD), by developing a monitor capable of detecting attackers by analyzing involuntary analog emissions across a variety of modalities.

Calling All Cyber SMEs
AI in Government
This presentation will describe ways in which NSF-sponsored AI research addresses a range of challenges and opportunities for individuals, government, industry, and society at large. It explores some of the major issues evoked by different AI approaches, including machine learning and deep learning. In addition to core research programs, AI research plays a key role in NSF Big Ideas on the Future of Work and on Data Science. The substantial impact of AI on the nature of work is evident in research on new tools, skills, and jobs. More broadly these changes emphasize the need for new educational approaches and techniques for reskilling workers. Extensive availability and use of individual data makes it possible to design new tools for understanding behavior and social functioning. These developments also make it clear that research is needed to ensure that AI systems result in fair and equitable treatment. The importance of having multiple disciplines taking a ‘convergent’ approach to AI research, emphasizing the need for multiple methods and perspectives, is highlighted.

Computing, Communications, Cyber Resilience and the Future of the U.S. Electric Power System

November 01, 2019 - Washington DC
Computing, communications, and information technologies have become essential in the planning and operation of our nation’s electricity system, a trend that is expected to increase in the future. How can we take advantage of new technologies while mitigating cyber security and resilience risks?

Join the National Academies’ Committee on the Future of Electric Power in the U.S . on November 1, 2019 for a discussion of how cyber security issues could shape electric power systems over the next 30 years. This workshop will synthesize current efforts to increase the cyber resilience of the electric power sector and discuss fundamental tensions that underlie adoption of computing and communication technologies, for example between centralized and decentralized architectures and responsibilities, between simple and complex technologies and systems, and between compliance versus security cultures.

Words of Wisdom
Reading maps or reading emotions? Barbie or Lego? We live in a gendered world where we are bombarded with messages about sex and gender. On a daily basis we face deeply ingrained beliefs that your sex determines your skills and preferences, from toys and colours to career choice and salaries. But what does this constant gendering mean for our thoughts, decisions and behaviour? And what does it mean for our brains?

Drawing on her work as a professor of cognitive neuroimaging, Gina Rippon unpacks the stereotypes that bombard us from our earliest moments and shows how these messages mould our ideas of ourselves and even shape our brains. Taking us back through centuries of sexism, The Gendered Brain reveals how science has been misinterpreted or misused to ask the wrong questions. Instead of challenging the status quo, we are still bound by outdated stereotypes and assumptions. However, by exploring new, cutting-edge neuroscience, Rippon urges us to move beyond a binary view of our brains and instead to see these complex organs as highly individualised, profoundly adaptable and full of unbounded potential.

Rigorous, timely and liberating, The Gendered Brain has huge repercussions for women and men, for parents and children, and for how we identify ourselves.

Alliances for Action: Coalitions, Collaborations, and Partnerships
When problems are large or highly complex – sometimes called “wicked”  – this is where coalitions, collaborations, and partnerships can make all the difference!
The recent Climate March is a great example of how individuals and organizations can come together to change the world for the better. Developing a shared agenda and taking collaborative action is key for success!
This year’s 4Gen will showcase individuals and organizations who have realized the African proverb,  “When you want to go fast, go alone, but when you want to go far, go together.”
Truly it takes a village to create and build a world where clean energy is the norm, where climate change has been reversed, where green jobs are the majority of the economy, and where humans live fully in cooperation with nature, for the benefit of the planet and of all life.

Yes, this ideal world IS possible. It is happening as a result of Leaders in Energy members working along with countless others committed to a harmonious green world!

Nominate a community member from each of the four generations, e.g., World War II, Baby Boomer, Gen X, and Millennial/Gen Z who exemplifies leadership in the energy and/or sustainability arenas here.
