Calling All Cyber & Tech SMEs
Security at the Speed of Cloud and DevOps
DevOps and cloud services are radically changing the way organizations design, build, deploy, and operate online systems.

Technology “unicorns” like Amazon, Etsy, and Netflix implemented a DevOps methodology and made use of cloud services early on, showing how organizations can deploy changes at a rate never seen before and set themselves apart from the competition. But today DevOps and cloud services are no longer exclusive to tech giants – business demands, rapid change, and an evolving threat landscape have led traditional organizations into the world of Cloud and DevOps.

Protect your business – Learn to deploy secure infrastructure and applications using DevOps and cloud services

At this Summit, cloud and DevSecOps experts from leading organizations will present case studies and lessons learned based on their real-world experiences. You can join fellow security professionals and developers in exploring new ideas, innovative approaches, and the latest tools for improving the reliability, integrity, and security of applications and infrastructure.

Funding Opportunities
The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) invites grantees with active CISE awards to submit requests for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Supplements , following the guidelines in the REU Sites and Supplements solicitation ( NSF 19-582 ). CISE also invites grantees with active CISE awards to submit requests for Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Supplements , following the guidelines in the RET in Engineering and Computer Science: Supplements and Sites solicitation ( NSF 19-575 ). Requests will be considered as they are received. CISE strongly encourages the submission of requests before March 30, 2020; the potential for funding requests after this date may be limited.

For single-investigator projects, CISE REU and RET supplemental funding requests should be for no more than two students or two teachers, respectively, for one year. Support for additional students or teachers can be requested as part of these supplemental funding requests if these students or teachers are from underrepresented groups, and the selected students or teachers are identified in the supplemental funding request. Research teams funded through multi-investigator projects may request support for a larger number of students or teachers, commensurate with the size and nature of their projects, with proportional additional support for students or teachers from underrepresented groups. Requests for larger numbers of students and teachers should be accompanied by detailed justifications.

NIST Call For Comments
NIST is proposing updates to its standards on digital signatures and elliptic curve cryptography to align with existing and emerging industry standards. As part of these updates, NIST is proposing to adopt two new elliptic curves, Ed25519 and Ed448, for use with EdDSA. EdDSA is a deterministic elliptic curve signature scheme currently specified in the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) RFC 8032, Edwards-Curve Digital Signature Algorithm. NIST further proposes adopting a deterministic variant of ECDSA, which is currently specified in RFC 6979, Deterministic Usage of the Digital Signature Algorithm and Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm. Finally, based on feedback received on the adoption of the current elliptic curve standards, the draft standards deprecate curves over binary fields due to their limited use by industry.
In addition to updating NIST’s Elliptic Curve Cryptography standards, Draft FIPS 186-5 proposes the removal of the Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA), noting recent security analysis against DSA implementations and increased industry adoption of ECDSA.
The proposed digital signature algorithms are included in Draft FIPS 186-5. NIST-recommended elliptic curves, previously specified in FIPS 186-4 Appendix D, are now included in Draft NIST SP 800-186.
NOTE: A call for patent claims is included on page iv of Draft SP 800-186. For additional information, see the  Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) Patent Policy--Inclusion of Patents in ITL Publications .

NCWIT - Making A Difference
Research shows that even individuals who consider themselves committed to equality still engage in unconscious forms of bias and discrimination that negatively affect the evaluations and experiences of women and other underrepresented groups at work. Biased performance evaluation undermines the meritocratic goals of talent management systems: to identify, develop, and retain talent, improve employee effectiveness, and build strong and innovative teams. These resources give you the tools to identify and avoid bias in performance evaluations.

Words of Wisdom
The shelf life of well-established companies keeps shrinking as new entrants replace old ones in rapid succession. Even brands that seemed invincible only a few years ago are in danger of being disrupted by fast-moving startups. In this unprecedented environment, how can any business stay ahead of the market?

Companies can no longer assume innovation will “just happen”—it must be seeded, grown, and successfully harvested. They must disrupt themselves.

In Disrupt-It-Yourself, bestselling author and innovation expert Simone Ahuja guides readers through the DIY (Disrupt-It-Yourself) system that will sustain innovation and retain DIYers, the employees—or intrapreneurs—most committed to solving the problems of the future, even if it means moving far beyond “business as usual.”

Based on her experience working with Fortune 500 companies and extensive research, Ahuja identifies the intrapreneurial archetype and presents eight new principles to foster a DIY mindset and action plan. In a clear, concise style with expert advice and real-world examples, this book
  • provides a new lens to help companies become faster and more fluid,
  • offers easy options to tailor the system to each company’s unique circumstances, and
  • presents strategic lessons—from Keep It Frugal to Make It Permission-less—that open up the full spectrum of innovation and make it sustainable.

Using the DIY approach, organizations can build their ability to innovate and create an approach for growth that harnesses the creativity and knowledge of employees at every level.

ASQ Innovation Technical Community Webinar

Collaboration in a Complex World

Speaker : Peter Merrill

Description: The majority of people’s knowledge is in their minds. Knowledge management (KM) recognizes that typically only 20% of an organization’s knowledge can be documented. If you combine the knowledge in people’s minds for two or more people you have a powerful combination. Collective knowledge is far more powerful than the knowledge in any one individual or in any manual. Effective collaboration produces this collective knowledge and starts by understanding the behavior of others. Getting the best ideas out of a diverse group means understanding what others bring to the table. It also means treating others with respect and not thinking your idea is the only idea. However, collaboration is challenged by the complex world we live in.
