M. Davis & Sons celebrates
150 years in construction
It is not often that you hear about a company celebrating 150 years in business. It is even less often that the same family has been running the company, weathering the storms of various historical events and economic downturns. M. Davis & Sons is celebrating our 150 year anniversary throughout 2020, and our success is owed to the five generations of the Davis family as well as our team who are committed to providing a superior level of craftsmanship and dedication to our customers. MOVING TOWARDS NEW AND BETTER
In the midst of the unrelenting challenge created both by the
COVID-19 pandemic and the nationwide multiracial movement toward social justice and equity, no one has the luxury of “business as usual.” In fact, there will not likely be an “as usual” for some time now. Our focus should be “new and better.” And that focus starts with us. Read more >

Skills Pave the Way to
an Equitable Recovery
|
|
For the 24 months leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the recession, the national unemployment rate rose no higher than four percent, and there were more job openings than there were job seekers. During this strong economic stretch, the Philadelphia and Cleveland Feds embarked on a study aimed at both helping employers fill open positions and identifying advancement opportunities for workers. The economy looks different today, but given the level of hiring anticipated in the months and years ahead, our findings may be more relevant than we could have ever imagined.

|
The objective is to identify the most feasible opportunities for workers to switch from a lower-paying occupation to a higher-paying one without the need to earn a bachelor’s degree. These very similar pairs of occupations are called “top transitions,” and this is what was learned about them:
- There are nearly 4,100 top transitions in the 33 metro areas we studied.
- Skills can be viewed as a bridge rather than as a gap.
- Nearly half of lower-wage jobs can be paired with a top transition.
- Top transitions can represent substantial wage gains.
- Skills can substitute for a four-year degree in some cases.

Marvin S. Gilman Bowl
The Gilman Bowl was established as a tribute to small business leadership. It is named in memory of Marvin S. Gilman, who served as an exemplary leader and a paragon of small business in Delaware. The identity of the recipient of the Gilman Bowl is held confidential until its presentation at the Superstars in Business awards luncheon on November 4.
The State Chamber's Small Business Alliance is now accepting nominations for this award of distinction to an individual – not an organization – who has made outstanding contributions to the small businesses and nonprofit organizations of Delaware. Nominate someone >

Message from the President
|
|
I have always said there is a mutual bond between employers and employees and that one cannot succeed without the other. In preparing this message, I dug around and conducted a bit of research to discover interesting data about the U.S. labor force today.
According to Pew Research, “Millennials are now the largest generation in the U.S. labor force. Roughly a third of Americans in the labor force (35% or 56 million) are Millennials – those ages 24 to 39.” Read more >
