Library News

The Celia Gurevitch Library is open for your reading pleasure. Books are available for check out on the honor system--take the books that you wish to read and when you return them (hopefully within a month), please reshelve in the same spot. Please do not remove books labelled REF as these are for on-site reference only. You are welcome to peruse them on site.

Not sure what you are looking for? Perhaps you enjoy reading biographies: these can be found in the 799 section. Bored with preparing the same old meals for dinner. We have a nice collection of cookbooks that can be found in the 699 area. There are lots of books for young children (something to amuse the grandkids, perhaps) as well as a great section of young adult books.

We have received a donation of books from the Batzdorffs. A big thank you to the family!

Social Action will make a dinner for the Palms residents August 17. We need more chili, cornbread, fruit and dessert.

We will make chili this month since Judi stopped by the store and containers and lids were once again available. Thanks Judi, we are giving containers to those making chili, which can be any kind or recipe.

The next Palms delivery will be Wednesday, August 17. Please let me know what you can bring so we can plan accordingly. Each one cooks from their own recipe in their own kitchen and makes individual packages for the residents, or buys packaged items.There are many ways to help. We meet at 3:00 pm in the street in front of Beth Ami August 17, but we will help pick up your contribution if you can's be there at that time. Leave a message for Lyla Nathan [email protected]

CBA Book Group is now reading S.Y. Agnon (1888-1970) 's TO THIS DAY (Fiction, 177 pgs., Hebrew, 1952; English translation 2008.) AGNON won the NOBEL PRIZE for Literature in 1966. He was the only Nobel Laureate to write in Hebrew.

Several years ago, our group read 1 of Agnon's earlier works. This is the last of his many novels. According to Dan Anbar, our Israeli-born group participant, Agnon's Hebrew is sometimes Biblical and style is interesting and he often uses his own made-up words --- it is not like modern Hebrew. Scholar, English translator, Hillel Halkin, gives us an extensive intro in this edition.

The SF Jewish Community Lib. where we borrow 12 copies of this book + a Hebrew copy has this 1 sentence to describe TO THIS DAY: " This comic tale of a Galician Jew who has lived in Palestine, returns to Europe on the eve of WWI and gets stranded in Berlin evolves into a profound commentary on exile, Zionism, divine providence, and human egoism. "

Exciting cemetery news at Santa Rosa Memorial Park – recently we have added 8 additional grave sites to our beautiful Beth Ami Front Lawn (which is the site to the temple handwashing monument).

There has been no property available in this Lawn for at least the past 10 years - please contact Jan (707.799.5870) at S.R.M.P. – for further information and a map of availability (and exact locations), in regards to their proximity to where you may have extended family, grandparents or loved ones buried.
