Cystic Fibrosis Hasn’t Slowed Down Macey Horbach On or Off the Ice
Diagnosed at age 10, the 18-year-old Horbach has thrived as a hockey player and advocate for a cure
By Greg Bates, Special to AHAI - When Macey Horbach started playing hockey at 8 years old, she didn’t have a care in the world. Horbach’s biggest worry might have been how she was going to play on her shift. But on Jan. 28, 2010, Horbach’s world was turned upside down. The 10-year-old was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). The progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time was a hard diagnosis to swallow for Horbach and her family. Prior to the detection, Horbach had undergone two sinus surgeries in a matter of 18 months. The doctors found polyps in Horbach, so she underwent standard tests to rule out symptoms, which included checking for cystic fibrosis.

At the risk of stepping into a proverbial minefield, here are some thoughts about those differences and how I approach coaching a female hockey player.
Serving and Giving as Important as Making Saves for Minnesota’s Sidney Peters
By Dan Scifo, USA Hockey - There’s more to life than hockey for Sidney Peters. That much was evident when the University of Minnesota standout senior goaltender was named the 2018 Hockey Humanitarian Award recipient earlier this month. The annual award honors college hockey’s “finest citizen” for leadership in community service.

19 Realities All Girls Who Played Ice Hockey Know To Be True
  1. You were usually the only girl at hockey camp.
  2. And when the coach asked you to break into pairs, the boys always picked you last.
  3. Which didn't really matter, because you'd usually leave them in your dust anyway.
  4. Discovering shoulder pads specifically tailored for your anatomy changed your life.
  5. Though it turned out they still didn't save you from the occasional rocket puck.
