D.C. Implements Mask Requirement as Part of Latest Order

Dear WANADA Members,

As part of her decision to extend the District of Columbia's stay-at-home order until June 8, Mayor Muriel Bowser is also requiring both employees and patrons of currently-open businesses to wear masks while engaging with others, and also while utilizing public transit or ride-share vehicles. You can view the text of this requirement in Sections III and IV of the mayor's latest executive order.

The ordinance does not apply to children age 9 or under, the homeless, or those who cannot wear a mask due to a medical condition or other disability. People in the District who are socially distancing outdoors, or who are exercising outside, are also exempt from this order.

Essential businesses in the District are required to provide their employees with masks, and to educate their workers on how to properly use them, as outlined in the city Department of Health guidelines. Essential businesses are also required to prominently publish a notice requiring all employees and patrons to maintain six feet of distance from others while in their establishment, and they are required to deny service to customers who are not wearing masks (unless they meet one of the exceptions outlined above).

You can view further interpretive guidance related to the mayor's restrictions in executive orders 053 and 054, which were issued back in March. You can also review the city's COVID-19 guidance at coronavirus.dc.gov. You may also view links to these resources and much more by visiting WANADA's COVID-19 Information Library.

The city is also soliciting feedback from business leaders as they establish the DC Economic Recovery Team; you can share your ideas at this link . Please let me or Joe Koch ([email protected]) know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

John O'Donnell
