OFF THE COURT                                                       By The Athletic Director
S pirit of the Nation:
D1SA stands as Loudoun's Powerhouse in leading the new generation of Spartans into battle against all odds. The winter season has provided a great stepping stone for the biggest basketball season in D1SA history, which is this spring. D1SA representatives for both boys and girls have contributed to an impactful 2018 winter season in local, travel, exposure, middle school, high school, and college levels. The standard of preparation has been set and the influence of present and former Spartan players has inspired a new a generation of Spartan athletes. This inspiration has now spawned its reach to aspiring ball players starting as early as the first grade. The organization will now provide playing environments and trainings to strengthen and improve their fundamental foundations so they too can grow and develop as the older players have. This basketball spring season will be the most anticipated season to date as D1SA looks to develop more teams and athletes within the proven program.  In these times we hope to bring our spartan philosophy to life within each athlete with no retreat, no surrender and NO FEAR!

TRAINING: SPARTAN WINTER INDOC Powered by LST
O n a wintery Thursday night at Douglass Community center gym in Leesburg...

"Someone in the crowd asked what is going on in here?"

Amongst all of these aspiring players and all of the commotion you can see the potential of hundreds of athletes. No matter the makeup of any player in the Spartan arena they were all in position to express the passion they had for the game in their own way.  The contribution to the sport in its most pure form against a relentless level of competition.

No instruction on what to do or how to feel. No coaches hovering over the athlete at the perceived mistake or the move that captivated the crowd having everyone on their feet roaring in enjoyment.

Coaches watching their athletes discover hidden talents outside of team concepts.

Parents observing the independence of their sons and/or daughters as they compete for the respect of their peers.

Players fighting for the reassurance of self-belief and self-confidence in their own abilities against a friend or foe.

That is why these athletes came.

To compete against competition but more importantly against their own fears.

SPARTAN SPOTLIGHT - Zyan Collins
Freedom's HS, South Riding's McDonald's All-American selectee and Conference Player of the Year, Zyan Collins who is the current leader in every statistical category except block shots where he sits at second has picked up from where he left off in high school.  He is now a scholarship athlete at California University of Pennsylvania, where he has started all 23 games played thus far, been voted Freshman of the week six times, while being honored two times.  To date, his productively ledger now reads:  16 points per game, 5 rebounds per game, 4 assist per game, 2 steals and 1 block per game.  Zyan, often referred to as the G.O.A.T, is a gym rat who has been working on his craft with and around the D1SA Spartans' program since its inception.  He finally came home after playing with a couple of high-profile AAU programs and teamed up with his buddies at D1SA in the Spring of 2014 and the rest became a magical run where his team, Spartan Elite Class of 2018 rose to the distinction of being one of the best teams within the Northern Virginia Region.

Zyan's journey was not easy because he had two sibling Arnelle Collins(graduate of King University) and Zachary Collins(Wheeling Jesuit University) who proceeded him with high school greatness as well.  The shoes seemed impossible to fill at times along with immeasurable pressures to just succeed, however, he has managed to blaze his own path with their support and blessings.  Zyan was a two-sport star, with major interest from some of the top football programs in the nation but choose his first love of basketball to play collegiately.  This is the first time in Zyan's career that he has been able to focus on basketball.  More importantly, if Zyan stays true to the game he will have an opportunity to play basketball after college.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
D1SA GIVING BACK...
S partan athletes spend hours before and after practice this month to make valentine cards for some very special members of our community that reside at Ashby Pond Assisted Living Retirement Home in Ashburn.  Over 150 valentines and gift bags containing toiletries and candies were hand-delivered by Spartans on Wednesday, February 13.  In keeping with one of D1SA pillars of promoting good-will through community service, the leadership of D1SA thanks all those Spartans who participated by donating items and showing up to make and deliver these tokens in the spirit of Valentine's Day.   Coach Eric Williams said, "its not always about instilling the love of the game, but at D1SA we work to provide our athletes with skills needed to be leaders and role-models in their community."

T his first community service event of 2019 will be followed with a year-long calendar of events and opportunities for our athletes to participate.  D1SA has a newly appointed committee co-chaired by Adrianna Duggen and Jen Wood Ulloa.  If you have community projects you wish D1SA athletes to engage in; or if you would like to join the planning community, please contact [email protected].

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL SPARTANS
R yan Newton
6th Grade, Brambleton MS
BY Gwen Newton, parent:

Ryan started with D1SA as we were looking for AAU programs in the Loudoun area and came across a number of articles speaking about the success of the D1SA program headed by some guy named Eric Williams. We registered Ryan for tryouts and in the Spring of 2016 his journey with D1SA began as he joined the 3rd Grade team coached by Allen Conrad.

In addition to basketball, Ryan participates in tennis - a favorite sport only second to basketball. He also enjoys training in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).

Ryan thinks that D1SA is a great organization and provides an opportunity to meet lots of friends. He says they are family and that Coach Williams is great.

Ryan has benefitted from being part of D1SA as it has exposed him to an environment that encourages hard work and commitment as a means to achieve at levels that have no boundaries. Ryan has grown as an athlete and has been trusted as a leader in helping his coaches introduce new players to the D1SA system. Of course, we do our best to instill these same qualities in Ryan at home; however, there is something special about how kids value this message when presented by their coaches and D1SA has recognized this and taken full advantage of this awesome opportunity to make a positive difference. As parents there's little more comforting than knowing your child has a home away from home.
