As the cool morning air starts to greet us each morning and Summer officially comes to a close this weekend, I wanted to share some of the great things that are happening within District 102.
- We are finishing our third week of COVID-19 screening and I am very pleased with the process and the results. We are on a small list of schools that have been able to provide this to our students and staff. The commitment from all involved has been incredible.
- The transition to the Canvas learning management system is going well. With any change, especially with a new system, there is a learning curve. We feel we are ahead of that curve knowing that there are still a few milestones to reach.
- The parent tech support sessions have been a success and these will continue for the next couple of weeks. As always please reach out to us if you need assistance.
- The changes brought on as a result of COVID-19 brought new challenges to our students, staff and parents. The D102 community has gone above and beyond to meet those challenges. The students have done a great job wearing masks, observing social distance rules and adapting to a new way of learning. Teachers are perfecting a new way to do what they love most in a new environment and our staff continually excels at making sure our buildings are safe to be in each day.
Thanks for your patience as we worked through the Daily Health Check-In communications. This continues to be an important part of our safety protocol and we appreciate each family’s dedication to performing this task each morning for our students attending in-person each day.
While we still have some challenges to overcome, I am very happy with the plan we laid out for a return to learning and we will continue to keep moving forward, following the plan into the unknown.
Enjoy the preview to Fall this weekend!

On September 17 each year, our country recognizes Constitution Day to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787. Constitution Day celebrates American Citizenship and was officially recognized by Congress in 1952.
The Constitution was "penned" by Jacob Shallus, a Pennsylvania General Assembly clerk, for $30 ($830 today). Ironically, one of the spelling errors found in the Constitution is the world “Pensylvania” right above the signatures of the delegates.
2020 is a census year and did you know that the census is written into the Constitution? Article I, Section 2, of the U.S. Constitution prescribes that a count of the U.S. population be done every ten years. If you have not filled out your census form, please take the time to learn the importance of this process and how it affects our community. Learn more here. It only takes a few minutes!

The National Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of culture and origin of Latinos and Hispanic Americans in the United States. The month-long event begins from September 15 until October 15. The celebration coincides with national independence days of several Latin American countries including Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Chile and Belize.
- In 1968, U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson first proclaimed the Hispanic Heritage Week as sponsored by Congress. It was expanded to a month in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.
- September 15 was chosen as the starting date to celebrate the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, all in 1812.
- Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain on September 16, followed by Chile on September 18 and Belize on September 21.
- The National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States, Canada and Latin America. The 30-day period aims to celebrate the culture, achievements and contributions of American citizens with Hispanic roots.

District 102 has several locations on the internet that serve as resources or homepages for the most up to date news and information. Navigating websites and social media sites can be exhausting, and we hope that providing the top sites in one location below will be helpful.
Powerschool - the home base for students and parents for registration, health check-ins, etc.
Canvas - The learning management system used by students and parents relating to their individual classes, grades, assignments, etc.
Social Media Sites:
At the tope of the newsletter, on the left hand side, you will also see links to each of the parent organizations.
