In his Superintendent's Report at our Oct. 15 Barrington 220 Board of Education meeting, Dr. Winkelman shared that Barrington 220 has been named the Best Unit (PK-12) School District in Illinois in the 2025 Niche rankings! There are a total of 386 unit school districts across the state. In addition, Barbara B. Rose Elementary has been named the Best Public Elementary School in IL in the latest rankings! Board approves 2023-24 audit report | |
At our Oct. 15 meeting, we approved the district's 2023-2024 audit report. The report was completed by Lauterbach & Amen, LLP. The district is happy to share that it has received another clean audit and auditors commended Barrington 220 for accuracy and efficiency throughout the process. D220 to join mutual aid program for public schools during a crisis situation | |
At our Oct. 15 Board meeting, we approved an intergovernmental agreement with school districts across Lake County and the Lake County Regional Office of Education. The goal of the Lake County School Mutual Aid Response Team agreement is to develop and implement programs designed to provide mutual aid during a crisis, primarily from a disaster or violence in school districts and cooperatives within Lake County. The programs also provide training and professional development to prepare school districts for response and recovery activities.

Framework 220 Spotlight: Learner Agency & Pathways |
In his Superintendent's Report at our Oct. 15 meeting, Dr. Winkelman highlighted an objective from the district's strategic plan, Framework 220, that the district is working on this year under the Personalized Learning priority. The purpose of the Learner Agency & Pathways objective is to create opportunities and experiences for all learners to pursue individualized pathways to explore their interests and passions, and to provide well-rounded educational opportunities to develop skills that increase student agency, preparing them to make future career, college, and life decisions. Framework 220 Spotlight: Social Media Awareness & Digital Citizenship | |
In his Superintendent's Report at our Oct. 15 meeting, Dr. Winkelman also highlighted an objective under the Health & Well-Being priority. The objective formerly known as Social Media Awareness has been renamed to Social Media Awareness & Digital Citizenship. This new name better reflects the objective's focus on concepts related to both digital citizenship and social media. As shared at our last Board meeting on Oct. 1, the district will work closely with many community stakeholders on this objective this school year.

D220 launching community-wide book study this week | |
In his Superintendent's Report at our Oct. 15 meeting, Dr. Winkelman shared that this week Barrington 220 is launching a book study called One Book, One Community! The book study, hosted by the District Equity Team, aligns with the Inclusive Education priority in the district’s strategic plan, Framework 220. The book study will feature the book Breaking the Code with Gabriella, written by current BHS students Hafsah Khan and Cindy Wang, and 2024 graduate Sarah Pinto. It's a story about the fight for inclusivity and belonging in STEM spaces, following the story of a young girl, Gabriella, who joins her robotics team as the only girl. You can pick up a FREE copy of Breaking the Code with Gabriella at your child's school during Parent-Teacher Conferences on October 17. Supplies are limited, so be sure to grab one while they last! Additional copies will be available at the Barrington Area Library or the District Administrative Center. This community-wide book study will culminate with a special fireside chat featuring the student authors at the annual Winter Wonderfest celebration at BHS on December 13! Special thanks to the Barrington 220 Educational Foundation for purchasing the books for the book study.

Barrington 220 enrollment remains stable | |
At our Oct. 15 meeting, we heard an update on student enrollment numbers in Barrington 220. Thirty days into the 2024-25 school year, the district's total enrollment was 7,988 students, a decrease of 55 students compared to last school year. This decrease aligns with the results of a demographic study conducted in 2021 with demographer Dr. John Kasarda. The 30-day enrollment figures are a snapshot in time. Enrollment will fluctuate during the school year and the district will continue to monitor it accordingly. Click here to listen to the enrollment update.

Board approves proposed 2024 IASB resolutions | |
At our Oct. 15 meeting, following a public hearing on the 2024 proposed Illinois Association of School Board's (IASB) resolutions, we approved which resolutions we plan to support. Every November school boards from across the state send a delegate to the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) November conference in Chicago. At this conference, the delegates vote on proposed resolutions IASB will pursue in the upcoming legislative sessions. As a Board, we voted to appoint our Vice President, Barry Altshuler, as Barrington 220's IASB delegate. The Board will support all of IASB's recommendations for each resolution. 400-pound pumpkin unveiled at Board meeting! | |
In his Superintendent's Report at our Oct. 15 meeting, Dr. Winkelman unveiled a more than 400-pound pumpkin grown by BHS horticulture students! In June students planted squash, corn, mums, and sunflowers along the west side of Hart Road. They practiced regenerative agriculture, which means no artificial fertilizers or pesticides were used. One of the pumpkins grew to quite the massive gourd! Thanks to the Barrington 220 Educational Foundation for its support of the BHS horticulture program. In 2022 it funded key upgrades in the BHS greenhouse.

The next consolidated school board election in Illinois is set for April 1, 2025. School board members are elected by their local communities during a non-partisan, consolidated election and serve four-year terms. Click here for more information.

BHS student shares why BHS is #ThePlaceToB | |
This school year, students from each Barrington 220 school will make a special appearance at our Board of Education meetings to share an update about the great things happening at their school. At our Oct. 15 meeting, we welcomed Shriya Ramesh, a junior at BHS. Shriya says that the academics and extracurriculars offered at the high school make BHS #ThePlaceToB.
