Continuing the Budget & a Community Concert! | |
|
I hope you all are enjoying the summer! For us at City Hall, Budget Season is under way and we have begun discussions around different departments and specifics pertaining to the City's Proposed Fiscal Year 2024 (FY 24) Budget. At Tuesday's City Council Meeting, we heard the budget proposals from our Police, Fire, and Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications Departments. You can watch the hearing here.
I am pleased to see there is one-time funding of $1.3 million in the Police Department for a Safety Response Unit to address current crime trends through measurable and increased community engagement, education, and collaborative enforcement is critical. Along those lines I am happy to see the redesign of our Community Police Academy and implement a new Public Safety Youth Leadership Academy.
In alignment with our commitment to comprehensive safety, another pressing concern has been met with encouraging progress. The matter of speeding and traffic enforcement, a topic frequently raised in our discussions, has not gone unnoticed. Having the funding of $300,000 to support traffic enforcement will help our city get to our and Vision Zero.
As the Councilwoman who represents Fire Station 9, I am pleased to see the ongoing improvements to ensure functionality of the temporary Fire Station 9; while also considering the estimated project cost of $20-$25 million proposed for the new Fire Station 9 to be funded by Measure A. The new Fire Station 9 is not only important for the residents in Cal Heights and Bixby, but the city as a whole.
Finally, I am pleased to see that our dispatch center is proposing to reinstate Public Safety Dispatcher positions to pre-pandemic levels and adding communications center supervisor. This will directly impact the safety, efficiency, and overall well-being of our community.
At next Tuesday's City Council Meeting, we will discuss the Proposed FY 2024 Budget from Development Services, Economic Development, Public Works and the Capital Improvement Program. I encourage you to attend, or watch online at 5pm, August 15, 2023.
While we work through this budget proposal for FY 24, we will keep you updated on the process. I look forward to our continued conversations and hearing from our residents and youth. Join the budget conversation and share your feedback below!
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community. Be sure to follow my social media @CWMeganKerr to stay connected!
Let's get to work,

Unleaded 94 Aviation Fuel is available!
As I mentioned in our July 28 newsletter, LGB's fuel supplier, Signature, has coordinated with Swift Fuels (Swift) of Indiana for the sale of Swift’s Unleaded 94 product at LGB. On Monday, August 7, 2023, Swift UL94 became availible at LGB.
The Airport estimates approximately 60-70% of the piston powered general aircraft based at LGB may be eligible to use the UL94 product. Although this is not 100% unleaded, this is a step in the right direction in getting leaded aviation fuels out of LGB. For more information regarding the city's efforts, view the memo from the City Manager here.
