Council Updates & Community Events | |

Happy Friday District 5! This week brought some more important updates, as we continue to shape the future of our City and our community!
At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, we discussed the results of the priority-setting workshops conducted over the last several months, as part of the City Council Prioritization Process to better inform future City programming. The Mayor and City Council agreed by consensus to a set of norms and key priorities, and from those a Work Plan is being drafted by the City Manager. Find out more about our City’s norms and priorities here.
One of those key priorities continues to be the affordable housing crisis our city faces. Which is why, on Tuesday, the Council approved the recommendation to amend the language in the City’s Housing Trust Fund to comply with the regulations of the California Department of Housing and Community Development’s Local Housing Trust Fund (LHTF) Program. These amendments will help further the goals of the LHTF as well as help the City qualify for matching funds. Click here to learn more about it.
As we continue towards the end of this month, the local events calendar remains full! I hope to see you tomorrow, Saturday October 21 from 10am – 4pm for the Festival of Flight to celebrate our airport’s 100 years of service. On Saturday, you can also join in the celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Harvey Milk Promenade Park, at 212 E Third Street from 1pm – 3pm. Celebrate with the community as seven local LGBTQ+ leaders will be inducted into the park’s Equality Plaza. While you're out, you can help support people experiencing homelessness at Long Beach's eighth consecutive monthly Drive-Thru Donation event! Find more information below.
If you want to get into the spirit of the season, you have options for that as well! You can spend the afternoon with Parkview Village at their first annual Harvest Fest, this Saturday from 2pm – 6pm. Then next week, join McBride High School’s annual Trunk or Treat event, on Wednesday October 25 from 6pm – 8pm, for safe trick-or-treating and some spooky car displays. Don’t forget to dress up! Find information about these events and more in the flyers below.
Finally, I'd like to remind everyone that our next Council Meeting will be Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 5pm. A list of the items of interest are at the bottom of this newsletter; I encourage you to attend, or watch online.
Let's get to work,
