Dana Neighborhood Library to Reopen For Service One Day a Week
|
Hi Megan,
I am thrilled to announce that the Dana Library will be returning for in-person service one day a week starting on Saturday, February 4th.
I know this has been an issue for many constituents who require in-person library services like collection browsing, research assistance, and public computer use. Because of this, our office made a request to city staff to look into ways to provide these services for the community.
Despite Long Beach Public Libraries being significantly understaffed, we were able to secure this temporary measure, so residents can access the Dana branch at least once a week while the Library system continues to address and resolve staffing shortages.
We look forward to the day when Dana Neighborhood Library will reopen fully, but until then, their in-person schedule will be as follows:
- Saturday, Feb 4th: In-person Service, noon to 5 p.m.
- Sunday and Monday: Regularly scheduled LBPL closure
- Tuesday and Thursday: To-Go Service only, noon to 7 p.m.
- Wednesday: To-Go Service only, noon to 6 p.m.
- Friday: To-Go Service only, noon to 5 p.m.
Tuesdays through Fridays, the Dana branch will continue to operate as a To-Go Service only location. The To-Go model of service allows patrons to place holds and pick up print and audiovisual resources such as books, DVDs, and Chromebooks.
As Library Services continues its recruitment and onboarding of new staff, the Department will look at ways to incrementally restore full service at all three locations currently offering To-Go only service. Staff anticipates that the Alamitos and Brewitt branches will also be able to reopen for in-person services at least one day a week in the coming weeks.
I am honored to serve as your Councilwoman and look forward to seeing you around the district soon. If you see me, please say hello and introduce yourself.
Sincerely,
Councilwoman Megan Kerr

Utilities Update
We understand that all of California is experiencing historically high prices for wholesale natural gas, leading to drastically higher gas bills this winter for our customers.
Thankfully, Long Beach Utilities assumed gas purchasing responsibility in January and took immediate action to adjust strategies, saving customers millions of dollars. For those who need it, long-term payment plans have been made available to customers struggling with their high bills.
We have seen that market prices in the rest of the country have normalized and prices in California are expected to follow in coming months. Our new Utilities Department is reevaluating gas buying strategies to focus on both price stability and price protection for our customers. If you would like to keep a close eye on wholesale natural gas prices, next month’s prices will be available to the public on Feb. 1.

We understand that the unusually high price of natural gas has been a financial burden on many families in our city, and we are working closely with our Utilities Department to ensure that we can do our part to bring that burden down as quickly as possible.
