Happy Labor Day | Budget adoption next week

As Labor Day approaches, it's a time for us to reflect on the invaluable contributions of our hardworking neighbors. This annual observance not only pays tribute to the dedication and diligence of our labor force, but also unofficially marks the end of summer. May we celebrate the achievements of our local workers and commemorate the spirit of labor that keeps our City thriving.

On the budget front, next Tuesday, September 5, 2023 will be the first opportunity for the City Council to adopt the Proposed Fiscal Year 2024; I encourage you to attend, or watch online. In this $3.2 billion proposed budget, we see a focus on focus on the key areas identified in the Long Beach Strategic Vision 2030, among other priorities like improvement of our urban forest and green spaces, continued enhanced spending on our youth and neighborhoods, infrastructure and traffic, and the ongoing concerns with the lack of housing and increase in those experiencing homelessness.

As I mentioned before, I am happy to see funding allocated to improve our urban forest in parks and green spaces. I will be advocating for tree replacement and maintenance in our CD5 parks and finding a way to get our community involved. Within the Capital Improvement Plan there is increased funding for our City's infrastructure and various District 5 locations like the new Fire Station #9, the Expo Building Facility, the African American Cultural Center, the Long Beach Historical Society Facility, as well as Heartwell & Wardlow Park, along with mobility improvements along Atlantic Ave., Clark Ave., and Studebaker Corridors.

Finally, as the district that spans from the LA river to the San Gabriel river, I am pleased to see funding support for city-wide cleanups including illegally dumped items in our parks and open spaces, and of large homeless encampment sites. These efforts are vital to the overall improvement and look of our City.

As we continue to work through this budget proposal for FY 24, I will continue to keep you updated. I look forward to our continued conversations and hearing from you.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community. Be sure to follow my social media @CWMeganKerr to stay connected!

Let's get to work,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

Long Beach, District 5

September is Disaster Preparedness Month!

In following FEMA’s ‘23 theme,Helping Older Adults Prepare for Disaster,” Long Beach's Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications will center this year’s National Preparedness Month outreach campaign on older adults & people with disabilities, as those community members are affected disproportionately when disaster strikes.

Throughout September, all community members are invited to the following National Preparedness Month activities:

  • Attend the Ready Long Beach Community Preparedness Expo on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the California State University, Long Beach campus. This is the largest community preparedness event in Southern CA and is free.
  • Join the Department at a pop-up event to speak with Disaster Preparedness staff and receive informational materials and resources. Pop up events will take place at various locations. Details on the pop ups will be shared on social media throughout September.
  • Follow the Department on Facebook and Instagram at @LBDisasterPrep. An educational and interactive social media campaign will run all month long and will include disaster preparedness tips, interviews with residents, and a question-and-answer session that will allow participants to receive disaster preparedness items.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert by signing up to receive emergency notifications from Alert Long Beach; be self-sufficient for up to seven days following a disaster by making a “go-kit” with items that are both essential and comforting like medicine or special dietary products; designate and practice an emergency plan; and learn lifesaving skills such as basic emergency medical procedures, CPR and first aid techniques.

The Department will also conduct focused outreach to local organizations and facilities that provide supportive services to vulnerable populations including the Gray Panthers, the Long Beach Senior Center, Long Beach Disabled Resources Center, Meals on Wheels, and older adult living facilities, in effort to ensure these organizations are educated and prepared in the event of a disaster. City Seeks to Mass Distribute Water to People Experiencing Homelessness, Donating Water to Local Community Based Organizations to Further Efforts

In an ongoing effort to increase access to clean water and other essentials for people experiencing homelessness, the Homeless Services Bureau (HSB) is offering cases of water to local community-based organizations and advocates supporting people experiencing homelessness. Community organizations interested in receiving cases of water are encouraged to submit a water donation request form.

Upon submitting the form and receiving a confirmation email, community-based organizations will be instructed to pick up cases of water on weekdays at the City’s Multi-Service Center (MSC), located at 1301 W. 12st Street, to distribute through their existing outreach and service avenues.

Case quantity is subject to the requesting organization’s charitable outreach needs and up to 20 maximum cases at a time. Organizations also interested in receiving other donated items, such as hygiene kits, clothing, and sun and heat protection items, can submit a donation request form. Community-based organizations with questions or seeking additional information about this effort may contact donations@longbeach.gov or 562.570.4636.
