Reminder to Fifth District Residents
Long Beach Airport Main Runway Closures
| |
|
Thank you to all the residents who have contacted my office to discuss the airport operations. I want to remind those of you living near the Airport that we will experience some temporary changes in aircraft activity to accommodate critical electrical updates at the Long Beach Airport. Closing a runway is a challenge for any airport, and this timeframe was chosen in close coordination with the FAA with the goal of minimizing impact. The temporary primary runway closure, as opposed to a complete airport shutdown, allows for continued necessary transportation service. The Long Beach Airport remains a vital connector for the LA/OC Basin transportation infrastructure.
Major electrical upgrades designed to improve the safety of the primary runway at Long Beach Airport are being installed from now through July, necessitating some temporary runway closures. During Runway 12-30 closures, operations will occur on Runway 8L-26R. Lighting and directional signage are critical components for the safety of an airfield, and this project will bring the Airport's primary runway in line with the latest FAA standards.

General Runway Info
Long Beach Airport has three runways. Runway 12-30 is the primary runway and is utilized for commercial air traffic. Runway 8L-26R is the secondary runway and is used for general aviation uses and for commercial air traffic when Runway 12-30 is closed. Runway 8R-26L is the shortest of the runways and is used for general aviation.
For more information, check out WebTrak, a community internet flight tracking system. WebTrak allows residents to track flight patterns, view noise levels and submit noise complaints.

This work is not possible to complete without the temporary closure of the primary runway. Due to the safety setback requirements of the construction work, there will be temporary runway closures between March 29 and mid-July:
- Runway 12-30 will be CLOSED NIGHTLY, Sundays through Thursdays, from March 29 to mid-July.
- Runway 12-30 will be CLOSED DAILY, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from April 18 to May 24.
More than 500 new LED lights will be installed as part of the electrical project. In addition to the safety benefits of brighter lighting, the LED bulbs use between 75 percent and 90 percent less energy and have a longer life expectancy than incandescent or quartz lights.
This week marks the 2nd of six daytime closure periods. More information on the project can be found on the public notice.
