Weekly Updates & Memorial Day Weekend | |
|
Happy Friday, District 5, and happy Memorial Day weekend! On Monday, we will honor and remember the military men and women who have given their lives in service of our country. We thank them for making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
To show your appreciation, I invite you to join the citywide Sunset Ceremony to honor our fallen heroes, this Sunday, May 26th from 5:30pm to 8pm at Shoreline Aquatic Park. Those interested in attending may even take the opportunity to ride a Long Beach Water Taxi to the ceremony location, as they are back in action beginning this weekend! You can also join community members at Forest Lawn on Monday, May 27th at 10am, in their annual Memorial Day Celebration. See below for more information. However you choose to spend it, I wish you an enjoyable weekend in remembrance of those who are no longer with us.
As a reminder, many Long Beach services and facilities will be closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday, including our CD5 office. Street sweeping and related parking enforcement will not be in effect, but you can expect refuse and recycling collection as normal. Click here for the full list of affected services and facilities.
Looking for more to do in CD5 this weekend? You can stop by the Hangar Lawn at LBX for an AAPI Heritage Month Celebration from 11am – 7pm. The all-day market will feature more than 40 vendors with a focus on AAPI businesses. Enjoy food, music, activities, and more!
Although no longer in CD5, the City is excited to share that tonight from 6-8pm is the El Dorado Park Summer Kickoff Concert at El Dorado Park West! The Parks, Recreation & Marine (PRM) Department will welcome the summer season with a free concert featuring the Under Cover Band. We look forward to the variety of PRM events coming up this summer, including our Municipal Band concerts at Los Cerritos Park on Wednesdays beginning June 26th, as well as movie nights at Cherry, Somerset, Heartwell, and Pan Am Parks. Visit longbeach.gov/park for more information, including a Summer Family Fun Guide!
For those interested in becoming more involved and making a difference in the community in meaningful ways, apply to serve on a City Commission! Visit the information page to learn more or email questions to readytoserve@longbeach.gov.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be on Tuesday, June 4th at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest will be provided in a future newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
The work continues,

Local Tuberculosis Outbreak, Risk to Population at Large Remains Low
On May 2, 2024, City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis declared a local public health emergency to strengthen the City’s preparedness and ability to respond to a localized tuberculosis (TB) outbreak. This declaration was ratified by the Long Beach City Council on Tuesday, May 7, and extended on Tuesday, May 21st.
The outbreak is currently isolated to a distinct population and the risk to the general public is low. The population at risk in this outbreak has significant barriers to care including homelessness and housing insecurity, mental illness, substance use and serious medical comorbidities.
To learn more about TB, visit the Health Department's webpage, where you can find answers to questions about TB Basics, Long Beach's TB Control Program, and TB Laws and Regulations.
If you think you might have TB, it's crucial to see a doctor as soon as possible for testing. Need a routine TB test? Visit our Immunization Clinic. For questions, call the Public Health Information Line at (562) 570-7907.
June 7th | Educational Webinar on Sidewalk Vending Ordinance
On February 26, 2024 the City’s Sidewalk Vending Ordinance became effective, creating the Sidewalk Vending Program. All sidewalk vendors in Long Beach are required to obtain a Business License, and if selling food, a Health Permit.
As part of the education and outreach necessary to begin enforcing the new ordinance, the Health Department is holding an informational webinar on Friday, June 7th. This webinar aims to provide clarity and guidance to aspiring entrepreneurs, existing vendors, and community stakeholders interested in understanding and navigating the new sidewalk vending ordinance. Learn more by visiting longbeach.gov/sidewalkvending.

Public Works Appreciation Breakfast
This week we attended the Annual Public Works Appreciation Breakfast, to thank our hardworking employees for the work they do every day to keep our city running safely and smoothly! We rely on Public Works to handle a wide range of operations from refuse collection, to filling potholes, to street sweeping, and more. The teams have powered through many challenges over the last year, from unprecedented storms to staffing shortages, and I am so glad to have been given the opportunity to show them our gratitude for all they do!
