Happy Friday, District 5! I’m sure all our students and young ones agree—summer has flown by much too fast. I hope yours has been as active and event-filled as mine! I am grateful for the many opportunities we have had to connect with one another, and I want to thank all of you who I have had the chance to meet and speak with in the recent months. I look forward to continued opportunities to engage with the community throughout the rest of the year!
On Tuesday, August 27th, we will be having a Council meeting where we will continue to discuss the proposed Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) budget, with presentations from the Library Services and Community Development departments. We’ll have more updates after the next meeting, but in the meantime, feel free to review all FY25 related materials, and continue to submit digital comment cards, at longbeach.gov/FY25.
Coming up this weekend, prepare to head back to school and enjoy the last official weekend of the summer vacation! You can get some last-minute shopping done from local vendors at LBX’s Back-to-School Market from 1pm – 6pm on Saturday, August 24th. After stopping there, you can head out to enjoy the evening at the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association’s Concert in the Park, complete with bounce house, car show, and food trucks, at Pan Am Park on Saturday, August 24th from 4pm – 7pm. Then on Sunday, August 25th, join LBPD East Division as they host a back-to-school event at Wardlow Park from 10am – 2pm! Enjoy ice cream, face painting, and bounce houses, while getting to know the officers in your neighborhood. That morning, you can also join neighbors in Bixby Knolls for the monthly Kidical Mass Bike Ride, which leaves at 11am from the back parking lot of Pixie Toys. See the flyers below for more information on these and other upcoming events!
As we think about next week, bear in mind that LBUSD schools are back in session on Tuesday, August 27th! This will likely impact traffic on nearby streets during pickup and drop-off times, and will increase the number of kids we see out on the sidewalks as they walk, ride, or roll to and from schools and bus stops. Be sure to slow down, stay mindful, and stay safe!
If you’re feeling like you have an empty nest with school heading back in session, consider adopting a pet from Animal Care Services! Through September 10th, LBACS is waiving adoption fees for any animal who has been in their shelter for 30 days or more. Help clear the shelters and bring a new furry friend into your home!
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 27th at 3pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
The work continues,
