Summer Nights & Weekly News

Happy Friday, District 5! The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are just around the corner, and I hope you’re all as excited as I am to see the world come together over the love of sport and the spirit of competition. Have you heard? Just in time for the upcoming games, we have officially confirmed seven sporting events to be held in Long Beach as one of LA’s Venue Cities for the summer games of 2028! As we cheer on our athletes from home this summer, we can officially begin to look forward to bringing the world to us in just a few years.

At Council this week, Mayor Richardson announced his commission appointments and reappointments for various non-charter commissions. Ten of those announced are residents of CD5! See below for the list of our district’s new and returning commissioners. Earlier this week, I was honored to join federal, state, Port of Long Beach officials to break ground on “America's Green Gateway Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility” at the Port of Long Beach. See below for more datils about how important this will be for our communities.

Looking for things to do this weekend? There are plenty of options right here in CD5! On Saturday, July 20th, you can spend all day at the Hangar at LBX, starting with the “Little Bloomers Art Expo” from 12pm – 5pm. Shop from local vendors and dine at the Hangar eateries while perusing a student gallery of artwork and a number of free creative activities. Then, you can stick around for LBX’s “90s Neon Night” Silent Disco from 7pm – 10pm, perfect for those who’d love to reminisce and dance to some classic throwbacks.

On Sunday morning at 11am, returners and newcomers alike are welcome at the monthly Kidical Mass neighborhood bike ride through Bixby Knolls; just don’t forget your helmet! And on Monday, July 22nd at 6:30pm, enjoy a mix of musical stylings from Seville and The Ohio Trio at the BKBIA’s next Concert in the Park(ing Lot). See the flyers below for more details and more upcoming events.

As a reminder, a couple of major community events are coming up on July 27th! You can start that Saturday morning off with the Long Beach Airport’s Historic Terminal Open House from 10am – 2pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy history tours, light refreshments, and be among the first to see the Historic Terminal returned to its former glory. That same night, you can head over to Vets Stadium for LBCC’s SummerFest & Drone Show from 4pm – 9pm, where you can enjoy live music, food, and all the festivities leading up to the drone show after dark. Hope to see you there!

While it feels like we are in the middle of summer, we know that families are continuing to look for opportunities to plan child care this coming fall. Take a look at the Long Beach Early Learning Hub ("The Hub"). The Hub has been built in close collaboration with LBUSD, the LBECE Committee, and the Early Childhood Education Program at the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services. Click here to learn more.  Also, for the middle schoolers in our lives, Rancho Los Cerritos is offering it Unplugged Camp (July 29 - August 2), see below for more details.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be on Tuesday, August 6th at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest will be provided in a future newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

The work continues,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

Port of Long Beach

America's Green Gateway Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility

On Thursday, July 18th, we broke ground on “America's Green Gateway Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility” at the Port of Long Beach this morning! We are grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration and Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, for a multi-million dollar federal grant for this new dock rail system at the Port of Long Beach. A project like this wouldn’t be possible without the additional partnerships of the State of California, the County of Los Angeles, LA Metro, and others agencies.

Together, the Port of Long Beach has won $643 Million in grant funding from federal, state, and local transportation agencies for this project. This investment in our community will bring jobs, reduce emissions, and improve the quality of life for many! Partnerships like these help Long Beach continue its mission in being the greenest port in the nation.

1131 E Wardlow Latest Updates

The process for demolition of the existing building on the Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC)-owned property at 1131 E Wardlow Rd. is currently underway with the installation of a pedestrian canopy and fencing. Our office was informed that the abatement process was on track to be completed ahead of schedule, which would shift the remaining work timeline ahead of the anticipated schedule as well. The LBFD training operations are now anticipated to run from 7/20 - 7/24, and active demolition at the site may start as early as Thursday, 7/25. While plans for the proposed development of the site are still in flux, early demolition of the existing property is recommended to mitigate potential problems and reduce the risk of the site becoming a neighborhood nuisance. Our office will continue to provide updates as they become available. For more information, review this letter from the LBCIC and FAQ sheet from the contractor, or direct any demolition-related questions to the Project Manger, Antonio Briones, at arbriones@amjcm.com.

National Night Out | August 6th

National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign that promotes strong police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live and work. The goal is to send a message to criminals that neighbors are unified, looking out for one another, and working with police to keep crime out of their neighborhoods.

Several community groups across the city, including the Los Cerritos and Cal Heights Neighborhood Associations, have already planned events. More details will follow as the events approach. If you'd like to host an event but aren't sure what to do, check out this list of NNO event ideas.

For more information about NNO and to find out how you can request a police representative to attend your event, call 562-570-5274 or email LBPDCommunityEngagement@longbeach.gov
