Keep reading for more information on the citywide Veterans Day celebration this weekend, as well as updates from the Public Works, Police, and Parks departments.
Don’t forget, this year’s annual Veterans Day Celebration is combined with the return of Beach Streets, this Saturday, Nov. 9th! Walk, ride, or roll along closed portions of Atlantic and Artesia, and stop by Houghton Park for the celebration and resource fair. See below for more details.

"Leaf Season" Friendly Reminder
The Public Works (PW) department reminds us that Fall is here which means falling leaves are plentiful. "Leaf season" results in a large number of leaves and organic debris on our streets. This requires multiple stops for the operator to empty the street sweeper.
Contrary to popular belief, street sweepers are not built for this purpose and will have difficulty removing large piles. Oftentimes, the street sweeper simply moves and spreads the leaf debris along its path, resulting in the operator needing to make multiple passes to collect as much debris as possible. As a result, the street sweeper is often unable to perform a thorough cleaning, and other routes or time zones may not be completed because the operator takes longer to sweep under these conditions.
Please help PW staff during this time by keeping in mind the following reminders:
- Dispose of leaves in your garbage bin or backyard compost.
- Avoid piling leaves and debris in the street, alley, or gutter for the street sweeper to collect.
