Veterans Donation Drive & Weekly Updates

Happy Friday, District 5! I want to begin by thanking everyone for a great turnout and a great time at our annual District 5 Aquarium Night earlier this week! It’s always a joy to see neighbors come together for an evening exploring one of our city’s great attractions. A huge thanks goes to Aquarium of the Pacific staff and volunteers for making the evening possible! If you weren’t able to join us this year, be on the lookout for next year! Turning to business, below are updates from city departments including Long Beach Utilities, Public Works, Technology & Innovation, and more.

At Council last Tuesday, we took a moment to recognize the Cal Heights Neighborhood in celebrating their 100th anniversary this year! Thanks to the Cal Heights Neighborhood Association for attending and providing a presentation on their community and their ongoing efforts to preserve and maintain the unique historic district. See below for more details.

As a reminder for those of you interested in learning more about the Orange Ave Backbone Bikeway, a project that will transform Orange Ave into a safer, more accessible multi-modal corridor, your next opportunity is coming up! You can join Public Works staff at one of their public open house events, either this Saturday, Nov. 16th from 2-3:30pm at McBride Park in CD6, or next Wednesday, Nov. 20th from 6 – 7:30pm at CD5’s own Expo Arts Center

If you’re raring to celebrate the upcoming wintertime holidays, you can get a head start here in CD5 this weekend! Start on Saturday, Nov. 16th by heading over to the Hangar at LBX for their second annual “Merry & Bright” Tree Lighting celebration for shopping, food, entertainment, and more, from 12 – 7pm. Then on Sunday, Nov. 17th, you’re invited to attend the BKBIA’s Kidical Mass monthly bike ride. For this year’s “Holiday Edition,” riders are encouraged to don their best “ugly” holiday sweater to get into the spirit of the upcoming season; and, of course, don’t forget your helmet!

As Thanksgiving approaches, ushering in the season of giving thanks and giving back, I hope you’ll consider giving to our Veterans Donation Drive! My office is working in partnership with the Long Beach Area Veterans Collaborative to hold a donation drive to collect useful items and support our local heroes in need. See the information block below or visit our webpage to learn more about what and where you can donate!

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 19th at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

The work continues,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

"Leaf Season" Friendly Reminder

The Public Works (PW) department reminds us that Fall is here which means falling leaves are plentiful. "Leaf season" results in a large number of leaves and organic debris on our streets. This requires multiple stops for the operator to empty the street sweeper.

Contrary to popular belief, street sweepers are not built for this purpose and will have difficulty removing large piles. Oftentimes, the street sweeper simply moves and spreads the leaf debris along its path, resulting in the operator needing to make multiple passes to collect as much debris as possible. As a result, the street sweeper is often unable to perform a thorough cleaning, and other routes or time zones may not be completed because the operator takes longer to sweep under these conditions.

Please help PW staff during this time by keeping in mind the following reminders:

  • Dispose of leaves in your garbage bin or backyard compost.

  • Avoid piling leaves and debris in the street, alley, or gutter for the street sweeper to collect.

Long Beach Airport

F/A-18 Operations at Long Beach Airport Nov. 15 - 17

Four F/A-18 aircraft are scheduled to operate at Long Beach Airport (LGB) from Nov. 15 to Nov.17. They are expected to arrive on Friday afternoon, Nov. 15, and depart on Sunday morning, Nov. 17. Please note that all times are tentative and subject to change.

Military aircraft are exempt from noise regulations. However, the military has consistently demonstrated a desire to assist LGB in being a good neighbor and will follow standard noise abatement arrival and departure procedures, including modified arrival and departure flight profiles and minimum use of afterburners. F/A-18 aircraft are noticeably louder than other aircraft and are easily heard in neighborhoods near LGB.

Community Shout Out

Cal Heights Celebrates 100 Years!

During the Nov. 12, 2024 Council meeting, we presented a proclamation recognizing the Cal Heights Neighborhood for its 100th anniversary!

Long Beach witnessed a boom of growth in the 1920s when oil was struck and when many families were looking to settle down post-WWII. As such, our city is at a special point in history when many groups, businesses, and organizations find themselves nearing or reaching their own centennial celebrations. This week we showcased one of our CD5 neighborhoods in that same boat, as members of the Cal Heights Neighborhood Association attended the Council meeting and provided a presentation on their historic neighborhood and their ongoing work. Thanks to the entire CHNA and all past, present., and future residents of Cal Heights for your contributions to making Long Beach a special place. We look forward to many more years to come!
