Weekly Update & CD5 Dump Day | |
Happy Friday, District 5! It’s October, which means it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time focused on sharing support for patients and survivors, as well as on educating women about the importance of being proactive about one’s health. Knowledge and early detection can save lives!
This Saturday, Oct. 5th, my office is partnering with Public Works for a District 5 Dump Day! Find us with dumpsters at any of three locations (the Expo Arts Center, Wardlow Park, and Pan American Park), and bring your old furniture, bagged garbage, or other large, bulky, difficult-to-dispose-of items to dump for free, and e-waste will be collected at each site! See below for more details and note, hazardous materials like batteries and paint will not be accepted. Thanks in advance to our Public Works Clean Team and local volunteers helping make this event possible, as we work together to keep these items off our streets, curbs, and alleyways. Hope to see you there!
October is also Arts Month! You can start those celebrations off tonight, Oct. 4th, at BKBIA’s First Fridays Art Walk starting at 6:30pm. Enjoy art, entertainment, live music, and more as you stroll along Atlantic Ave’s shops and eateries. Keep an eye out for the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library as they share resources and information regarding last week’s National Banned Books Week! You can continue your support of the arts all month long with Long Beach’s Open Studio Tour, a free, self-guided tour where artists invite community members into their studios to showcase their work and their working environments. Each weekend this month focuses on a different area of Long Beach, starting with Uptown on Oct. 5th and 6th, and later the East Side on Oct. 26th and 27th! See the flyers below to learn more about these and even more to do this weekend.
As October continues, spooky season ramps up! Plan ahead to attend Parkview Village’s Second Saturdays Halloween block party on Saturday, Oct. 12th, or stop by LBX on either Saturday Oct. 12th or Sunday Oct. 13th for “spooktacular” themed pop-up markets. Later this month, save the dates as well for the Long Beach Festival of Flight on October 19th, and the Historical Society of Long Beach’s annual Historic Cemetery Tours on Oct 26th! See the flyers below for more info on these and other upcoming events!
For those who observe, I wish you an easy fast and a meaningful Yom Kippur next week. May this holiday of personal reflection and atonement bring you peace and good fortune into the new year!
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 8th at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter, including Item 18, that I have cosigned with Councilmembers Zendejas and Austin, calling for enhanced Code Enforcement blight reduction and revitalization of vacant lots and storefronts. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
The work continues,
