Weekly Update & Fall Refresh | |
|
Happy Friday, District 5! To all those observing Rosh Hashanah next week, Shanah tovah! At sundown on Wednesday, Oct. 2nd, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year celebration, begins. I wish you a warm and joyous holiday filled with reflection, renewal, and sweet beginnings in the new year!
As you peruse this newsletter, check out our information blocks below for updates and notices of upcoming work that may be in your area or on your routes from a handful of city departments, including Parks, Recreation & Marine, Community Development, and the Port!
If you’re looking for activities in the community this weekend, there are plenty to choose from! Starting tonight, you can support the St. Cornelius Cougars during their annual Fiesta running all weekend long, complete with games, activities, a beer garden, and more. Tomorrow, Sept. 28th, you can start the morning by joining the Bixby Strollers for an offsite stroll through Lakewood Village and Long Beach City College. Connect with neighbors with the 3.5-mile stroll, starting promptly at 7:30am from LBCC’s Parking Structure J. Tomorrow, you can also head downtown to the BJK Main Library for the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library’s Big Book Sale. Support the nonprofit that directly supports our libraries with book sales starting at $1!
This weekend is also the perfect time to start clearing out unwanted items taking up space in your home. Tomorrow, Sept 28th, you can bring old documents to Vets Stadium for a free shred event, old spare tires to a free tire recycling at 2755 California Ave, and old electronics to a free e-waste collection near the Colorado Lagoon. For other large, bulky items you may have left, save those for our District 5 Dump Day next Saturday, Oct. 5th, to dispose of in a dumpster at one of three CD5 locations. See the flyers below to learn more.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 1st at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
The work continues,

The northbound lanes of the Shoemaker Bridge in Long Beach will temporarily close for repairs this weekend, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28 and 29, resulting in traffic restrictions to several nearby roadways and freeway onramps connecting downtown Long Beach and the Port to the northbound 710 Freeway.

Want to be part of the largest urban river clean up in the country? Participate in this year’s Great LA River Clean Up on October 5th! Over the last 34 years, volunteers have collectively prevented 1.6 million pounds of debris and trash from harming local habitats and flowing out into the ocean. This year, you can choose from four clean-up sites, including Long Beach’s Willow Street Bridge, where the river transitions from flowing for more than 20 miles in a completely concrete channel to the last natural bottom stretch as it travels the last few miles to the Pacific Ocean.
