Weekly Updates | August 15, 2025

Happy Friday, District 5! Are you ready to Discover LBCC with us tonight? I hope to see you at the free community concert on the beautiful LBCC Campus to enjoy another summer evening connecting with neighbors and friends. See more details below, as well as this week’s updates from Police, Public Works, Animal Care Services, and more.

Conversations around the FY26 Budget continued at Council this week, as we heard the budget presentations from our Long Beach Police and Fire Departments. See below for more information, and don’t forget that there are still opportunities for community members to join the conversation as well! An in-person community budget meeting will be held in District 5 this Saturday, August 16th from 10am – 11:30am at the Wardlow Park Community Center, and the online Digital Comment Cards will continue to be accepted until August 21st.

If you’re looking for local activities, CD5 is abuzz with community events this weekend! Again, we hope to see you at the Discover LBCC Community Concert tonight at LBCC from 5 – 8pm, but you can also choose to attend a free concert from the Long Beach Community Band at Wardlow Park at 6:30pm, followed by the Parks, Rec, & Marine Department’s showing of Wicked at sundown. Tomorrow, August 16th, you can take preventative action against catalytic converter theft at LBPD’s next Etch & Catch event at the North Division station from 8am – 2pm. Later on Saturday the 16th, you’ll once again have two options for free outdoor concerts – you can stop by the “Rocksteady” Airwaves concert at the Long Beach Airport, or head over to the Hangar at LBX for the next of their “Reggae Summer” Concert series, both taking place from 5 – 8pm.

Mark your calendars for some additional events coming up, such as the next CD5 Community Meeting (featuring speakers from Long Beach Utilities) on Thursday, August 21st; the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association’s free community concert on Saturday, August 23rd; and our next District 5 Dump Day on Saturday, September 6th! Keep an eye out below for additional details. As a friendly reminder, LBUSD schools will be back in session starting Tuesday, August 26th – be aware of walking students and traffic impacts near schools, and remember to drive safely and plan your routes accordingly!

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers, during which budget hearings will continue with presentations from the Community Development and Health & Human Services departments. The full agenda and a list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

Working together,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

CD5 Community Meeting | August 21

Join us at the next CD5 Community Meeting, being held at the Wardlow Park Community Center on Thursday, August 21 at 6pm.

This time, we will be joined by team members from Long Beach Utilities, to talk about the services, programs, and resources offered by LBU and to answer community questions. We hope to see you there!

If you plan to join us, we encourage you to optionally RSVP to help us prepare the space.

District 5 Dump Day | September 6

Join us for the next District 5 Dump Day! On Saturday, September 6th from 8am - 12pm, residents are invited to visit Wardlow Park, Pan Am Park, or the corner of Roosevelt & Cerritos (near Hughes Middle School) to drop off unwanted household items! This is a great opportunity to get rid of any bulky items that don't fit in your regular bin, such as furniture, mattresses, and e-waste. Dispose of them for free and help keep often-dumped items out of our streets, alleys, and waterways!

*The following items will not be accepted: paint, aerosol cans, household cleaners, batteries (car or household), hazardous waste, fluorescent lights.*

On that same day, the Lakewood Village Neighborhood Association will be hosting a Donation Drive event at Pan Am Park as well, should you have any gently used items you wish to donate rather than dump! See their flyer below for more details.

Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Cycle

FY26 Budget Cycle

At Council this week, Budget Hearings continued as we heard presentations from the Long Beach Fire Department and the Long Beach Police Department, outlining their success, challenges, and asks to support these vital city services and their operations and programs.

  • LBPD Chief Wally Hebeish led his department’s presentation, where it was great to hear of the successes of such programs as the Neighborhood Bike Team, the High Crime Focus Team, and the Quality-of-Life team, among others, and to see the requests for continuations of their support in the budget. Learn more in the full presentation or video.
  • Fire Chief Dennis Buchannan shared LBFD’s report, with some notable successes including programs educating the community on emergency preparedness, both in LBUSD classrooms and in bolstering the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program with 61 newly graduated volunteers; as well as success with the Rescue 2 pilot program, which adds four additional paramedic units during peak hours, improving response times and availability of units citywide. Learn more in the full presentation or video.

I am grateful for the vital work being done by both of these departments every day, and the thoughtful care put into their budgets regarding operational needs to keep our city running as smoothly, efficiently, and safely for all who call Long Beach home.

The Budget Oversight Committee meetings and Budget Hearings will continue throughout the month of August until the Budget Adoption Hearing on Sept. 9, 2025, at 5pm. If you have not done so already, I encourage community members to engage in the budget process by attending a Community Budget meeting – such as the one tomorrow, August 16th at 10am at the Wardlow Park Community Center – or by submitting a Digital Comment Card before the end of the day on Thursday, August 21st.

Public Works Department

Organics Collection - Reminders & Tips

If you’ve received your green organic waste bin, your Residential Organics Collection Service has begun. Over the last few weeks, the Public Works team has rolled out the next phase of green bin distribution (for those with Tuesday/Wednesday refuse collection service), and as of August 12th, green carts should be collected per the same schedule as your trash (black) and recycling (purple/blue) carts. For those with Thursday/Friday collection service, expect delivery of your green cart in early October. For guidelines, reminders, and tips on what goes into your green bin, as well as information on exchanging for a smaller size bin to reduce rates, visit longbeach.gov/LBOrganics. For questions or assistance regarding collection and service, call the Refuse Hotline at (562) 570-2876.

As a reminder, the City is required to implement this service and rates that cover its costs to all single-family and multifamily residences that generate organic material, to comply with an unfunded State mandate per the State of California’s Senate Bill 1383. All State mandates are enacted and amended at the state level, and your state legislators are the only ones who can make changes to this law. If you wish to share feedback or concerns regarding this unfunded mandate, we encourage you to reach out to your State Senator or State Assemblymember

LBPD Etch & Catch Event

Join the LBPD for their next Etch & Catch Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention event, being held at the North Division Police State (4891 Atlantic Ave) from 8am – 2pm on Saturday August 16th.

This free event is open to any Long Beach resident to have their vehicle’s VIN or license plate number etched onto the catalytic converter of their vehicle. This process can assist LBPD investigations if your catalytic converter is stolen and may also act as a deterrent to discourage criminals from stealing it. Register today!

Animal Care Services

Info & Resources - Flea Medications for Long Beach Pets

Earlier this month, the Health & Human Services Department shared that they are reporting higher-than-usual numbers of flea-borne typhus so far this year along with a localized outbreak, compared to other years. Typhus is a bacterial disease spread to people by infected fleas typically carried by rats, opossums, community cats, pets, and other animals. Review the recent press release to learn more.

Reducing or eliminating fleas on pets can help reduce the risk of flea-borne typhus infection, such as with anti-flea medications, whether topical or oral. However, fleas are becoming resistant to some common over-the-counter topical medications, thus veterinarians are now recommending oral medications, which require a vet consultation for prescription.

To help increase access to this prescription medication to the community, the Community Animal Medicine Project (CAMP) offers vet consultations at some of their mobile clinics for only $26, after which the pet can be prescribed the oral medication – note: vet availability is noted on CAMP’s online calendar by a pawprint next to the time. After a mobile clinic consult, pet owners can receive up to a year’s worth of flea medication at once, or can come back to pick up additional flea medications at no additional consultation fee. The next local mobile clinic with vet consultation availability is tomorrow, August 16th, at the Signal Hill City Hall (2175 Cherry Ave, Signal Hill, 90755) from 9am – 1pm. Visit campla.org to learn more or find another upcoming clinic to attend.

Additionally, the Little Lion Foundation, a non-profit based in CD5, holds Affordable Wellness Clinics for Owned Cats, during which they will begin to offer the oral flea medications for cats for around $22, with no additional vet consultation fee. Learn more and make an appointment at littlelionfoundation.org

In Memoriam: Skip Keesal

Earlier this week, Long Beach lost one of our great community members, Samuel “Skip” Keesal. Among many notable accomplishments, Skip ran a successful local law firm which earned him national recognition, while never failing to give back to the community through charitable organizations, civic projects, professional mentorship, or just lending a hand to those in need. Skip was an inspiration to many professionally and beyond, as he set an example of unmatched kindness, generosity, and pride for his community. I extend my sincere condolences to all the friends, family, and loved ones, he left behind, and may his legacy live on in all whose lives he so greatly impacted.
