Weekly Updates & End of Autumn Events | |
|
Happy Friday, District 5! I hope you’ve all been enjoying the crisp, cool autumn weather as Thanksgiving waits just around the corner. Keep reading for this week’s updates from city departments such as Public Works, Utilities, Economic Development, and more.
Earlier this week, Long Beach commemorated Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in honor of World Pancreatic Cancer Day, held annually on Nov. 21st. Pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest cancers, with only 12% of those diagnosed surviving longer than 5 years. Spreading awareness provides opportunities for education on the risks and the resources and shows support for those in our communities who have been affected by this disease. Thank you to Dr. Patel from City of Hope and Mr. Reitler from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) for providing an informational presentation at Tuesday’s meeting, to help promote this education and awareness!
This week, my colleagues and I also recognized Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) and raised the Transgender Pride Flag at the Civic Center Plaza. Held annually on Nov. 20th, TDOR is a time celebrate, honor, and stand up for our transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse friends, family, and neighbors, and to remember those members of our community who have been lost to anti-trans violence. I am proud that with the resolution passed at Council on Tuesday night, this day, and November as Transgender Awareness Month, will continue to be recognized in Long Beach for years to come.
Are you looking for ways to spend time in CD5 this weekend? On Saturday, Nov. 23rd, you can start your day in an active way by joining the Bixby Strollers on their weekly walk, taking off from Coffee Bean (4105 Atlantic Ave) at 7:30am. Shortly after, you can join neighbors in for a community clean up starting from 4555 Orange Ave on Nov. 23rd from 8:30-9:30am. Then, you can head over to LBX for this week’s holiday-themed pop-up market on Saturday, Nov. 23rd from noon to 6pm to shop from local vendors and enjoy family-friendly activities, including a “letters to Santa” station.
As the holidays approach there will be no shortage of community activities; start filling your calendars for early December! You can kick things off with the 2nd Annual Cal Heights Tree Lighting on Thursday, Dec. 5th. That same evening, Dec. 5th, you can connect with others about loss and grief during this time of year with the New Hope for the Holidays grief support event. The following weekend, you can experience the Women’s Moto Project’s 2nd Annual Moto Rodeo on Saturday, Dec. 7th; then join my office in a District 5 Pet Adoption & Vaccination Clinic at Rosie the Riveter Park on Sunday, Dec. 8th. See the flyers below for more details on these and other upcoming events!
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 3rd at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest will be provided in a future newsletter.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
The work continues,

Public Works Dept
Orange Ave Backbone Bikeway Project - Community Open House
On Wednesday, Public Works staff hosted a community meeting at the Expo Arts Center to solicit community feedback on the proposed designs for the Orange Ave Backbone project. Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend the meeting. My team and I were there to listen in on the presentation as well.
The City Traffic Engineering Team provided a brief overview of the project, that is in alignment with the 2017 Bike Master Plan and the 2020 Vision Zero Plan. After the presentation the meeting dispersed into breakout discussions where community members could have questions and comments addressed by a team of project-specific subject matter experts from the Public Works Department. Community members also had the opportunity to submit written comments and feedback on the proposed designs.
I understand that many residents left with questions still unanswered and felt their feedback was not adequately expressed due to the meeting’s format. I have requested that the Public Works team hold another community feedback meeting after the holidays, with a larger group discussion as the focus, before any final decisions are made. This will give an additional opportunity to provide input on this project.
Linked below are the materials provided at the meetings as well as the referenced bike master plan and vision zero plan. The Public Works team is working to update this project's webpage and has indicated that they will provide further information via email to those who provided an email address on the meeting’s sign-up sheet. In the meantime, share these resources with fellow interested neighbors who were not at the meeting or who may not be subscribed to my office’s newsletter.

Small Business Saturday | Nov. 30th
As shopping for the end-of-year holidays kicks off after Thanksgiving, don’t forget to support your local businesses on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30th! Small businesses are central to the Long Beach community and a vital part of the city’s culture and economy. Shopping locally can reduce environmental impacts, increase local competition and innovation, and support business owners that are more likely to reinvest back into the community. Here in CD5, we are lucky to be home to a wide array of small businesses, especially in our business corridors like Bixby Knolls, Norse Village, and Parkview Village! Don’t forget, you can even earn rewards at participating businesses with ShopLongBeach! Be sure to check out local deals and offers at CD5’s small businesses next weekend and all year round.

Community Shout Out
CCLB Sends Local Young Adults to Aid in Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts
This week, one crew supervisor and four Corpsmembers from the Conservation Corps of Long Beach (CCLB) departed from Long Beach Airport for Black Mountain, North Carolina to serve the communities most affected by Hurricane Helene. The crew is part of an AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team (A-DRT). A-DRTs are a coalition of service programs from across the country dedicated to mobilizing members to provide critical services at disaster sites.
Over the past 10 years, Conservation Corps’ have sent crews to respond to Hurricane Katrina, Sandy, Harvey, Irma, and Florence. Administered and led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), this crew will help address local needs due to Hurricane Helene. The CCLB crew of five will be in North Carolina for 30-60 days. Historically, crews have participated in disaster response services such as using chainsaws to remove downed or hazardous trees, cleaning mud and debris from damaged homes, food and emergency supply coordination and distribution, and community shelter assistance.
Thank you to these amazing Corpsmembers for not only caring for our local communities but extending your service to those in need across the country! Your dedication and commitment is inspiring, and we are proud to have you representing our city as you answer the call to serve!
