Weekly Updates | Feb. 21, 2025

Happy Friday, District 5! In the coming weeks, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the local and citywide community – more on that below, as well as this week’s updates from the Airport, the Arts Council for Long Beach, LBPD, and more.

If you’re looking for activities in CD5 this weekend, you can support local vendors and small businesses with one (or both!) of two pop-up markets at LBX. You can start off on Saturday, Feb. 22nd for a “Paris Romance” themed market from 12 – 7pm. While you’re there, consider helping a cat find a forever home by checking out The Cat Cove’s adoption event at the LBX Petsmart from 12 – 3pm. Then head back on Sunday, Feb 23rd from 12 – 7pm for the “LBX Neighborhood Market,” complete with a magic show and a reptile show, as LBX’s partner Angel City Markets celebrates their four-year anniversary. Additionally, on Sunday, Feb. 23rd, all are welcome to join KIDical Mass, the monthly neighborhood bike ride through the streets of Bixby Knolls and Cal Heights, taking off from behind Pixie Toys at 11am. Lastly, I encourage all who are interested to visit Fair Trade Long Beach for a local Death Café, an opportunity for philosophical discourse and community support on what can often be a difficult topic.

As a reminder, next Wednesday, Feb. 26th, the Community Development Department will hold an Open House & Town Hall at 6pm at the Expo Arts Center, to discuss the status and design of the proposed affordable housing community at Wardlow/Cerritos. The following night, Thursday, Feb. 27th, I hope you’ll join myself, my team, and some guests from LBPD at a Community Information Meeting at 6pm at the Wardlow Park Community Center as we engage in a discussion about Public Safety & Civic Engagement. See the flyers below for more details on these and other upcoming events.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest will be included in a future newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

Working together,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

The Long Beach Police Department and the Office of the City Prosecutor are hosting the 602 – No Trespassing Program on Saturday, February 22 from 10am – 12pm! Enrollment in the program allows business owners and residential complex managers to post an approved “No Trespassing Sign," which then gives LBPD the authority to warn, cite, or arrest trespassers, even if the owner or agent is not on the premises at the time. The City Prosecutor’s Office will have a Public Notary present, who will notarize a Request for Service free of charge. RSVP today!

Long Beach Airport

US Navy F/A-18 Military Operations at LGB | Feb 21 - 23

Three F/A-18 aircraft are scheduled to operate at Long Beach Airport from February 21 to February 23. The aircraft are expected to arrive at the Airport in the afternoon on Friday, February 21 and depart around noon on Sunday, February 23. Please note that times are approximate and subject to change.

Military aircraft are exempt from noise regulations. However, the military has consistently demonstrated a desire to assist LGB in being a good neighbor and will follow standard noise abatement arrival and departure procedures, including modified arrival and departure flight profiles and minimum use of afterburners. F/A-18 aircraft are noticeably louder than other aircraft and are easily heard in neighborhoods near LGB.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the Noise Office at 562-570-2635 or LGBNoise@longbeach.gov

Honoring Black History Month with Pan-African Flag

Earlier this week, we raised the Pan-African Flag at the Civic Center Plaza in honor of Black History Month. For the past 100 years, the tri-colored flag has been a unifying symbol of the Black experience in the US and across the world. I am proud to live in and represent a city where we actively display our commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and connectivity across all walks of life. There continue to be ways to celebrate Black History Month here in Long Beach, including Arts Council for Long Beach’s upcoming event, “Roots & Rhythm: Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future,” this Sunday, Feb. 23rd on the Queen Mary. Long Beach Launches "Love Your Block" Program

Last week, the City of Long Beach, in partnership with Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, launched Love Your Block, a community-driven initiative that empowers residents to take action and enhance their neighborhoods. With this partnership, Long Beach joins a national network of cities committed to supporting resident-led efforts to create lasting, positive change.

Through a community-led Civic Deliberation Team, residents will come together to address local challenges and drive meaningful change in West Long Beach. The Civic Deliberation Team will identify a key priority, develop an action plan and create challenge statements to guide residents in submitting grant proposals. Through a series of workshops, team members will ensure that funding is directed toward impactful, community-driven projects that align with local needs.

As part of this effort, the Love Your Block program will provide mini-grants of up to $2,500 for resident-led projects, empowering community members to take action and create lasting positive change in their neighborhoods.

Long Beach residents, especially those living in West Long Beach, interested in applying for a mini-grant, joining the For Your Block Civic Deliberation Team, or volunteering for the program are encouraged to complete the Love Your Block Interest Form which is open for the duration of the initiative. Submitting the interest form ensures that residents receive the latest updates, guidance and resources to prepare for the upcoming grant application launch on Earth Day, April 22, 2025. Learn more in the recent press release

Los Angeles County Assessor

Make Sure Property Records Are Up to Date

LA County Assessor Jeff Prang reminds property owners of the importance of keeping property records up to date! See the following message from his office:

If your property was damaged or destroyed in the January wildfires, the Assessor’s Office wants to help you get the property tax relief you’re entitled to. However, to ensure a smooth process, it’s important that our records correctly show who owns the property.

Why does this matter?

Sometimes, our records don’t reflect the actual owner because a property was inherited but never officially reported to us. This happens when a property owner passes away, and their heirs don’t notify the Assessor’s Office of the transfer. If this information isn’t updated, it can lead to unexpected tax issues, including back taxes for multiple years if we later discover the change in ownership.

What should you do?

If you inherited a property but never reported the transfer, we encourage you to check our records and submit the necessary forms to avoid surprises. The required form is the Change in Ownership Statement/Death of Real Property Owner, available here.

Special Circumstances That Could Help You:

Certain transfers from a parent to a child may qualify for tax relief under:

Proposition 58 (for transfers before February 15, 2021): If you inherited property from a parent before this date, you may qualify to keep the existing tax assessment. Learn more here.

Proposition 19 (for transfers on or after February 15, 2021): If you inherited a home and now live in it, you may qualify for tax relief. Learn more here.

By ensuring our records are up to date, you can avoid unexpected tax bills and make sure you receive the relief available to you. If you’re unsure about your property’s ownership status, we recommend checking with the Assessor’s Office as soon as possible.
