Weekly Updates | January 2, 2026

Happy New Year, District 5! 2026 is officially here, and with it, a spirit of reflecting on all that has come before and looking forward to what the future may bring.

As we charge head-on into the new year, the City is already beginning the development process for the next Fiscal Year, 2027 (FY27), Budget. Want to be part of the conversation? Attend one of the upcoming Community Budget Meetings taking place throughout the City this month to share your thoughts, questions, and priorities during this crucial early stage. See the info block below for more information.

As a reminder for those who frequent First Fridays in Bixby Knolls every month, there is NO First Friday event taking place tonight, Jan. 2, 2026, but the BKBIA plans for regularly scheduled festivities to resume in February. In the meantime, find more local activities citywide and across the district throughout this month, including next weekend’s Second Saturdays “Winter Flip Flop Fest” at Parkview Village on Saturday, Jan. 10 from 11am – 3pm; the 2026 State of the City Address on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 5:30pm at the Terrace Theater; the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade kicking off at 10am on Saturday, Jan. 17; a Mills Act Workshop at 10am on Saturday, Jan. 24; and the return of our monthly CD5 Community Meetings on Thursday, Jan. 29. See the flyers below for more info on these and other upcoming events.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda and a list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

Continuing the work,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

Holiday Treecycling | Now - Jan 9

The City of Long Beach is once again offering free Holiday Treecycling, providing an accessible and responsible way to recycle live trees for residents. Now through Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, residents can drop off their used trees at 13 locations throughout Long Beach, at no charge.

Christmas trees are NOT accepted in organics carts as they are too heavy and bulky. To ensure the trees are diverted from landfills, residents are encouraged to drop off their trees at any of the 13 locations listed on the flyer. Locations in and near CD5 include:

  • Wardlow Park – Monlaco Rd. at Rutgers Ave., 90808
  • Scherer Park – 49th St. at Del Amo Blvd., 90807
  • El Dorado Park – 2760 N Studebaker Rd. (at South parking lot, behind admin building), 90815

Residents are asked to remove all decorations and stands, and cut any trees over 12’ tall in half. For those who aren’t able to drop trees off, a one-time special collection will occur on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026. Residents with refuse, recycling, and organics collection service must place trees at their regular collection location by 7am on Jan 10 to have their live tree collected. Learn more in recent press release.

Upcoming Budget Meetings | Share Your FY27 Priorities

The City of Long Beach is inviting members of the public to participate in the City’s Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) budget development process by sharing their service priorities at one of the upcoming community budget meetings or by completing the Long Beach Budget Priority Survey.

The community budget meetings will be held in person at multiple locations throughout the city, and one in a virtual format; check the attached flyer for details on dates, times, and locations. While none of these meetings are physically in CD5, the city aims to hold the meetings at varying throughout the city during each Fiscal Year development process, and we encourage everyone interested to attend the virtual meeting or an in-person meeting at one of the provided locations if able.

In addition to the meetings, community members may also submit their budget service priorities by completing the Long Beach Budget Priority Survey, available online at longbeach.gov/FY27 now through Friday, Feb. 6, 2026. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog. Those with limited access to a computer or smart phone may visit a public computer lab available at any open Long Beach Public Library location to access the survey. Recently Published Staff Reports

Safe & Sane Fireworks Feasibility & Assessment

As requested by Council on Oct. 7, 2025, a staff report was released last week regarding whether the City should adopt an ordinance regarding the potential sale and use of what are commonly referred to as “Safe & Sane” fireworks. The memo reflects collaborative efforts of multiple City departments and partner agencies contributing expertise related to enforcement, community safety, and public education; and within, staff presents an overview of other regional municipalities, comparative data, and local impact analysis to help inform any potential policy direction. As a reminder, this report does not confirm any policy change or action at this time, and all fireworks, including those labeled “Safe & Sane,” remain to be illegal in Long Beach. If you witness illegal firework activity, please report it via:

  • the Go Long Beach App or website

  • the LBPD Non-Emergency Line: (562) 435-6711
*Call 9-1-1 for emergencies only. People should not call 911 to report fireworks, unless the fireworks have caused an injury or fire.*

  • Emailing the patrol division where the activity is occurring and provide as much information that can be investigated as possible, such as addresses, videos, license plates, and photos. Please include your contact information so you can be reached if necessary.

E-Bike Safety Initiative

As requested by Council on Oct. 21, 2025, a staff report was recently released outlining a preliminary status update on the interdepartmental work underway to review existing laws, explore potential municipal code updates, and assess opportunities for community education. Additional time is needed to prepare a final report, however the recent memo provides the background and context of E-Bike usage, current regulations, and community concerns, as well as current education campaign and outreach efforts, potential municipal changes and policies, and upcoming work and next steps. Staff will continue this work in the coming months and plan to return to Council with a full presentation before the end of May 2026.
