Weekly Updates | June 13, 2025 | | |
Happy Friday, District 5! This weekend, we celebrate Father’s Day; I hope it will be a meaningful day of connection in honor and celebration of the fathers and father-figures in our lives. Happy Father’s Day!
At the City Council meeting on Tuesday, my colleagues and I voted to award the contract for construction work of the Studebaker Rd Complete Streets project, signaling the next step forward for this highly anticipated infrastructure improvement project. See the info block below for more details.
Looking for ways to spend time in CD5 this weekend? You can start tonight, June 13th, with the first of LBX’s two pop-up markets, a 2nd Fridays Night Market, from 5 – 9pm, for shopping and entertainment while supporting the Hangar eateries and return on Saturday, June 14th from 11am – 7pm, for a summer-ready Luau Celebration, complete with vendors, activities, and a Polynesian Dance performance. Additionally, on Saturday, June 14th from 11am – 3pm, you can support local vendors and engage in family-friendly activities with the small businesses at Parkview Village for their “Dad Fest!” Second Saturdays Block Party, just in time for Father’s Day. Before you head out for shopping, you can also take time to express your creativity through both drawing and dance, by attending the next Artist Workshop at Rancho Los Cerritos, on Saturday, June 14th at 10am. See the flyers below to learn more about these and other upcoming events.
As LBUSD is officially out for the summer and summer schedules tend to fill quickly, be sure to keep an eye on the free summer concert schedule included below! Both city-sponsored and community-led events are gearing up to begin the week after next, and there are plenty of dates to look forward to all summer long. Aa a reminder, you’re also invited to join my team and I as we hear from the Public Works Department and the Port of Long Beach at our next CD5 Community Meeting on Thursday, June 26th at 6pm at the Wardlow Park Community Center. Learn more below, and be sure to RSVP to help us prepare the space.
A friendly reminder that next week holds another federal holiday for celebration: Juneteenth. On Thursday, June 19th, we honor and commemorate the end of slavery in the US, when on June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom the end of slavery by the Emancipation Proclamation. I hope your day is full of celebrations of community and culture, and recognition of the ongoing fight for human rights and equality across our diverse nation. In observance of the federal holiday, a number of City services and facilities will be closed, on Thursday, June 19th, including our District 5 office. Trash and recycling will be collected per their normal schedules, however street sweeping and associated parking enforcement will not occur.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda and a list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
Working together,

Recent & Upcoming Council Items
6/10/25: Studebaker Rd Complete Streets Project - Contract Awarded
At Council this week, my colleagues and I approved Item 31, which awarded the construction contract for the Studebaker Rd Complete Streets project to All American Asphalt, the contractor selected through the project’s bidding process. This approval from Council signals the next step forward for Studebaker Rd and the long-awaited project that will implement a series of infrastructure and safety improvements along the 5.1mile corridor.
In a briefing with Public Works ahead of the meeting, it was noted that the contract was being awarded at a value somewhat under the budget allocated for this project. While exact amounts and determinations for use cannot be confirmed before the project is underway, I formally proposed the idea and will continue to advocate for the use of any extra funding allocated to this project to be used for repairs on the residential service roads along CD5’s portion of Studebaker that are in need of attention.
To learn more about the project, its funding sources, and other details, please review the item and its attachments or the meeting's video recording. Additional information on the project can be found at longbeach.gov/studebakerccsp.

6/17/25: Dana Branch Library Repairs & Improvements
At next week's meeting, Council will hear Item 50, a request to allocate and utilize funds to provide much-needed repairs to the Dana Branch Neighborhood Library. This local community resource has been in critical need of attention, highlighted by the roof leaks sustained during this last winter's stormy season that resulted in unplanned closures. I have been working with the City Manager's Office to advocate for prioritizing these repairs, and I am glad to see the funding identified and the possibility to move forward. Should the item pass next Tuesday, I look forward to the work that aligns with our commitment to keep libraries open, operational, and safely accessible for all.

Coexisting with Coyotes - Reminders & Tips
Seeing a coyote walking down a busy street is not as uncommon as most would think. Contrary to popular belief, coyotes do not require open space to survive, and have successfully adapted to living in close proximity to humans.
Coyotes can be seen anytime but are most active at dusk, nighttime, and dawn. Residents are reminded to follow safeguards to protect pets and property against coyotes.
An Animal Control Officer will respond to coyote calls if the coyote is sick or injured or if there is an attack or threatening behavior toward a person or pet.
Learn more at ACS’s Living with Coyotes page, where you will also find the city’s Coyote Management Plan, and where you can report coyote sightings. If a coyote is posing an imminent threat to life, call 9-1-1.
