Happy Friday, District 5! With yesterday’s equinox, spring is officially here, along with longer days, warmer weather, and for many, the impulse to clean! If that sounds like you, keep reading for more info on our upcoming Dump Day, as well as updates and upcoming events from LBPD, Public Works, Community Development, and more.
This weekend, I encourage any local history buffs to visit Rancho Los Cerritos on Saturday, March 22nd, for a special film screening of Fire on the Hill at 5pm. Enjoy the critically acclaimed documentary about the history and culture of the Black Cowboys of Compton & South-Central LA, followed by a Q&A panel with the makers of the film! That same evening, March 22nd, you could also support local Boy Scout Troop 117 by attending their Magic Show fundraiser at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church at 6pm, complete with refreshments for purchase and an opportunity drawing for some great prizes! See the flyers below for more information.
Looking ahead, next weekend will be chock full of ways to engage with the local community! First, you can get into the spirit of spring cleaning at our District 5 Dump Day on Saturday, March 29th—in partnership with Public Works, find my team with dumpsters at the Expo Arts Center, Wardlow Park, or Pan Am Park from 8am to noon to dispose of your large, bulky items for free! That same morning, the Community Development Department is holding a community Walk Audit as the second opportunity to discuss and hear feedback on Zone In: Bixby Knolls, leaving from Steelcraft (Long Beach Blvd side) at 9am. Additionally, all are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the city’s new Community Cat Project, located at the Little Lion Foundation from 1 – 3pm. Lastly, I invite you all to spend the afternoon on Sunday, March 30th for District 5 Day at the Dirtbags game! Join us at Blair Field at 1pm to watch our CSULB baseball team take on UCSB. Learn more about these and other upcoming events below.
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda as well as a list of items of interest will be included in a future newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

Go Long Beach
Use Go Long Beach for 24/7 Reporting of Non-Emergency Issues
Want to report some unsightly graffiti, dumped items, e-scooter violations, or other non-emergency issues in your neighborhood? Submit a report through Go Long Beach!
Download the app to your phone or visit golongbeach.my.site.com to submit a report or service request. Start by choosing the type of request, then provide additional details such as issue descriptions, specific locations, and photos if you are able. Those requests are then immediately added to the appropriate department’s work queue to address. You can choose to report anonymously or create an account so city staff can keep you updated of your request progress. You can also use the open data portal to see requests submitted by you and your neighbors all across Long Beach.
Go Long Beach offers a streamlined approach to reporting concerns directly to the correct departments and at any time of day, reducing inefficiencies of the back and forth between our Council office and each department. That said, feel free to follow up with us at 562-570-555 or district5@longbeach.gov if you wish to provide or are seeking additional information on your requests. Learn more about Go Long Beach and how to submit a report at longbeach.gov/golongbeach.

Community Development Department
Share Your Thoughts on Zone In: Bixby Knolls | March 29th
The City of Long Beach is hosting a community walk audit for the Zone In: Bixby Knolls Project. This Zoning Update is part of the broader Zone In Program, a systematic rezoning of areas throughout Long Beach to implement the General Plan Land Use Element and the 6th Cycle Housing Element, and to ensure the City’s compliance with state planning and housing laws. The rezoning will help the City establish sufficient zoned capacity to meet existing and future housing needs as required by state law. We invite you to attend the community walk audit as the next opportunity to learn more about the project and provide feedback on the types of uses and buildings that you want to see in your community. Click to RSVP for the first walk audit.

Long Beach Animal Care Services
Community Cat Project Grand Opening | March 29th
The City of Long Beach Animal Care Services, in partnership with The Little Lion Foundation, is launching the Long Beach Community Cat Project. This project, a first of its kind in the city, is focused on significantly reducing the overpopulation of free-roaming community cats in Long Beach and its service cities of Cerritos, Los Alamitos, and Signal Hill by providing free and accessible sterilization surgeries and animal care resources to community cats.
Community members and animal serving organizations with community cats are encouraged to participate in this program to help support the City’s goal of drastically reducing community cat overpopulation. Those interested may submit an application at The Little Lion Foundation website or call LBACS at 562.570.7387 for more information.

To celebrate the project launch, the City and The Little Lion Foundation invite the community to a Grand Opening event and ribbon-cutting ceremony, taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at The Little Lion Foundation headquarters (1179 E. Wardlow Rd.).

Marine Mammal Care Center
Toxic Algal Bloom Affecting Wildlife | What to Do If You Encounter a Live-Stranded Marine Mammal
The Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) is reporting increased numbers of sea lions and dolphins stranding themselves on beaches along the coastline, showing symptoms indicating domoic acid toxicosis. Domoic acid is a naturally occurring neurotoxin produced by algae that accumulates in fish such as sardines and anchovies, which are then consumed by marine mammals, leading to severe neurological symptoms. This toxin can cause seizures, aggressive behavior, lethargy, dehydration, vomiting, and even death in a variety of marine mammals, dolphins, and sea birds.
While it is always dangerous to approach a marine mammal on the beach, sea lions affected by domoic acid can be especially aggressive, often awaking from a seizure with little notice. This is a safety issue for people and their pets as much as it is for the marine mammals. Please see the following reminders for What to Do If You Encounter a Live-Stranded Marine Mammal:
-
Stay Back – Keep at least 50 feet away to minimize stress and prevent unintentional harm.
-
Call for Help Immediately – Contact Marine Mammal Care Center at 1-800-39-WHALE (94253).
-
Do Not Push the Animal Back into the Water – Stranded animals often come ashore due to illness or injury. The best thing we can do is reduce the animal’s stress and suffering and wait for rescuers to arrive.
-
Minimize Noise & Disturbance – Avoid loud sounds, keep dogs and crowds away, and speak in hushed tones.
It is unknown at this time how long the toxic algal bloom will continue to affect local marine life. Please exercise caution and remember to call the MMCC immediately if you observe a stranded marine mammal.

Recent Council Item
Item 22: Transgender Day of Visibility
At Council on Tuesday, March 18th, I was proud to sign on, along with Vice Mayor Uranga, to Councilwoman Allen's Item 22 to request an official recognition of March 31st as Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) here in Long Beach. TDOV is a day where people across the country and around the world come together to raise awareness about the experiences, achievements, and ongoing struggles of transgender individuals. Especially in present times, it’s important that we stand up for the rights of all people to live freely and be who they are. Long Beach has a long history of advocacy and support for our LGBTQ+ family, neighbors, and friends, and I am proud that we will take this chance to recognize TDOV to show Long Beach is a safe city for anyone to call home.
