Weekly Updates | March 27, 2026
Happy Friday, District 5! Though the first quarter of 2026 has seemingly flown by, there is still plenty to do and look forward to throughout the remainder of the year. Keep reading for info on upcoming activities and events, as well as this week’s updates from Public Works, Long Beach Transit, the Friends of Long Beach Animals, the City Clerk’s Office, City Commission vacancies, and more.
Thanks to everyone who joined my team and I at Wardlow Park yesterday evening for our Community Meeting with the Public Works Department. For those who missed it, check out the info block below for a brief recap.
Looking for local activities this weekend? You can start off your weekend bright and early by joining the Ridgewood/Bixby Knolls Clean Streets team for a community cleanup starting from 4555 Orange Ave. on Saturday, March 28th at 8:30am. Then, you can visit the Hangar at LBX for this week’s Easter-themed event on Saturday, March 28th from 12 – 7pm, complete with egg decorating, Easter bunny photo ops, and more. Then on Sunday, March 29th you can head downtown to Bixby Park from 12 – 4pm to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility to uplift, affirm, and stand in solidarity with transgender and nonbinary community members.
More opportunities for engagement are available this coming week as well, including the Doing Business with the City Expo on Thursday, April 2nd, at 10am at the Wardlow Park Community Center. This informational event is designed to help businesses and nonprofits access the city’s contracting opportunities, connect with staff, learn about available businesses resources, and more. Later on Thursday the 2nd, you can also connect with LBPD East Division officers at Coffee with a Cop at the Starbucks at LBX from 4 – 5pm.
Later in the month, I encourage you to save the dates for the next CD5 Community Meeting on Thursday, April 23rd; an Earth Day Cleanup of the 405 Freeway in partnership with Caltrans on Friday, April 24th; and the City Nature Challenge at Willow Springs Park on Saturday, April 25th. Learn more about the above-mentioned and other upcoming events in the flyers and info blocks below!
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda and a list of items of interest will be included in a future newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

CD5 Community Meeting with Public Works | Recap
Thanks to all who joined us at last night’s CD5 Meeting featuring Public Works. We had a great turnout and an informative discussion around Public Works’ role, goals, and projects within the Fifth District and citywide.
Public Works shared a presentation that provided a brief overview of the department’s organization and several initiatives and projects relevant to the Fifth District. Some key takeaways include:
- Info on the Slurry Seal Program, which targets streets in marginal condition or better, to prevent them from falling further into poor or very poor conditions, when more costly complete resurfacing is required. Since the onset of the program, Public Works has completed nearly 1.5 million square feet of Slurry Seals, representing 72% of the work scheduled in the Elevate ’28 Infrastructure Investment Plan (IIP).
|
- An overview of features and general timeline of ongoing street work in CD5. These projects include pavement and infrastructure improvements, and multimodal safety enhancements for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users.
-
Carson Complete Street Project - Expected completion is Summer 2026.
-
Clark Ave Phase 1 (Spring to Conant) – Expected completion Spring 2026
-
Clark Ave Phase 2 is planned to begin Spring 2026, immediately following Phase 1 completion, with expected completion in Fall 2026
- Clark Ave Phase 3 (Conant to Northern City Limit) is currently only funded for design; construction will be scheduled when funding is available.
-
Cherry Ave Complete Street Project – Expected to begin late Spring 2026 and expected completion in Late Summer 2026
-
Studebaker Rd Transformation Project – 5 Phases of project, Phase 1 underway as of this March, expected overall completion in Late 2027
- Orange Ave Improvements – Expected to begin Late 2026
|
- Info on facility improvements under Public Works’ purview, including the ongoing Fire Station 9 project (expected to be complete Summer 2026) and the recent improvements at the Expo Arts Center that were completed last December
- An overview of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program, some results of which include 16 speed limit reductions in CD5 and the installation of Rapid Flashing Beacons on the crosswalk on Wardlow near Lakewood Blvd and Clark Ave near Skylinks Golf Course
- An overview of the Automated Speed Enforcement Pilot Program, which will undergo device installation and public noticing this Spring, before the warning period this Summer, and the issuing of citations beginning this Fall
- Reminders on how to report concerns directly to Public Works via the Go Long Beach app or website

Friends of Long Beach Animals
Get 'Em Fixed in the Fifth!
As you may know, Long Beach shelters are overcrowded with dogs and cats needing homes. The Friends of Long Beach Animals (FOLBA) is a local nonprofit committed to reducing the population of shelter animals and unhoused community animals in the Long Beach and surrounding shelter service areas. FOLBA helps promote, sponsor, and support the adoption of pets from Long Beach Animal Care Services shelters and other partner organizations. Since their inception in 1989, FOLBA has also sponsored spay and neutering of over 18,000 animals and counting. By spaying or neutering your pet, you help stop the cycle of overpopulation at its source. If financial concerns have held you back from this important choice for your pets’ and the community’s health, FOLBA’s latest partner initiative, Get ‘Em Fixed LBC, is here to help!
Get ‘Em Fixed is a community organization that provides financial assistance to low-income pet owners in Long Beach, as well as resources to access affordable, compassionate spay and neuter services. To qualify, fill out the simple application found on the Get ‘Em Fixed LBC website, where you can also connect with a dedicated team that can guide you through process from application to appointment. You can also learn more about this initiative in this recent article.
As someone who has fostered and cared for countless shelter pets throughout my life, I am proud to help sponsor this important work happening right here in Long Beach. I hope you’ll take advantage of these great local resources, consider adopting a local shelter pet, and Get ‘Em Fixed in the Fifth!

Purple to Blue Recycling Bin Exchange Reminders
Back in February, the City’s recycling contractor, Waste Management (WM) began the state-mandated exchange of all city-serviced recycling carts from purple to blue. WM continues to rollout this exchange citywide, a process expected to continue for another 4 – 6 months. If you have not yet received your blue bin, or if your purple bin has not yet been collected, see the below reminders, or check out the Recycling FAQs webpage.
Delivery Instructions: Place purple recycling carts at your regular service location by 6am, even if they are not full. This ensures all purple recycling carts are removed. Leave all purple recycling carts out and accessible until the end of the day.
What if I received a blue recycling cart but my purple one wasn’t picked up?
Place your purple cart at your regular service location. The entire delivery area will be rechecked by the recycling art recovery team twice within the same 24-hour period and again the following week on the regular service day to recover any purple carts that were not set out earlier.
There is no need to call the City if you forget to leave out your purple recycling cart on the day your blue recycling cart arrives. Simply set it out later that day or on your next service day.
