Weekly Updates | May 1, 2026
Happy Friday, District 5! I hope you’re as eager as I am to kick off the month of May and all it holds, from spending time and showing care for our mothers and mother-figures, to getting active and staying healthy with month-long celebrations like Bike Month and Older Americans Month. Keep reading for more info on community events this month, as well as this week’s updates regarding Election Day, the Port’s Sponsorship program, LBWIN’s Public Service Fellowship, and more.
Thank you to everyone who joined my team and I on Wednesday for our annual free Aquarium night! It was an incredible turnout and a wonderful opportunity to connect with neighbors while enjoying one of our city’s great educational and entertaining attractions.
For those looking for local activities this weekend, you can celebrate the start of May with friends and neighbors beginning tonight, May 1st, at the BKBIA’s Arte de Mayo–themed First Fridays Art Walk. Tomorrow, May 2nd, you can help support Bike Month and sustainable reuse by donating gently used bicycles that may be taking up space in your home or garage at any one of four locations across the city from 9am to noon during the Recycle Your Bicycle Event. Both today and tomorrow, you can also peruse deals in the South of Conant Neighborhood at the annual Neighborhood Yard Sale taking place on May 1st & 2nd between Clark to Charlemagne and Spring to Wardlow. Lastly, I encourage neighbors to support local performing arts students at LBCC by attending the Spring Dance Ensemble in Concert, showing tonight at 7pm or tomorrow at both 1pm and 7pm.
As we plan for next week, I encourage any history buffs or park enthusiasts to join the BKBIA at Bixby Knolls National Park on Thursday, May 7th at 10am, for a celebration honoring the anniversary of President Teddy Roosevelt’s first visit to California in 1903, often said to have inspired his creation of the US National Park Service. The celebration at the pocket park (fittingly located on the corner of Roosevelt Rd. & Long Beach Blvd.) will be attended by special guests including a Roosevelt impersonator and Chris Epting, author of Theodore Roosevelt in California: The Presidential Adventure That Saved the Wilderness. We hope to see you there!
Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda and a list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.
As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.
Continuing the work,

Denim Day 2026
Thanks to YWCA, LBPD, CD8, and Partners for the Inaugural Denim Day Rally!
Earlier this week, we hosted Long Beach’s inaugural Denim Day Rally in partnership with Councilwoman Thrash-Ntuk and the YWCA, whose new Survivor Empowerment Services office is located here in District 5. It is incredibly important for us to continue to raise awareness of the value of consent and healthy relationships, to dispel misconceptions around sexual violence, and to show survivors we believe and support them. Thanks to all who helped make this inaugural event possible, and for the ongoing work being done by organizations across our city to support survivors and bring an end to all forms of sexual violence.
