Weekly Updates | November 7, 2025

Happy Friday, District 5! Next Tuesday, Nov. 11th, is Veterans Day, a national day of recognition to honor and celebrate veterans and those currently serving in the United States military. Join friends and neighbors to show your appreciation at the 2025 Long Beach Veterans Day Celebration being held this Saturday, Nov. 8th, from 12 – 4pm at Houghton Park. See below to learn more about the afternoon event, as well as updates regarding the new Utilities online portal, the Studebaker Rd. project, food assistance resources, and more.

As a reminder, city services and facilities will operate as normally scheduled on Veterans Day and throughout next week, including refuse collection, street sweeping, and associated parking enforcement.

If you have yet to submit your public comment regarding the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Systems Pilot Program, you may still have time to act! The 30-day public review period closes tonight, Nov. 7th at 5pm. Visit the program website to review the draft reports and suggested system locations, and submit your feedback on this important safety program. Additionally, there is still time to participate in the City’s Urban Forest Plan (UFP) Survey, being used to collect community input for tree maintenance, policies, and investments into growing our urban forest. Visit the UFP webpage to learn more, and submit your feedback by Sunday, Nov. 9th to ensure the plan is reflective of the community’s ideas, priorities, and values for Long Beach trees.

This weekend there are plenty of ways to spend time with the District 5 community. Tonight, Nov. 7th, is First Fridays in Bixby Knolls in celebration of Día de Muertos, complete with Mariachi music, art pop-ups, and the chance to honor loved ones at the community ofrenda. Then tomorrow, Nov. 8th, kick off your Second Saturday bright and early by volunteering with a local Clean Streets Team for their monthly cleanup from 8:30 – 9:30am at either 4555 Orange Ave or 1240 E Carson St., before celebrating “Fall Fest” at the Parkview Village Second Saturday Block Party at 5423 E Village Rd from 11am – 3pm. See the flyers below for more information on these and other upcoming events!

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. The full agenda and a list of items of interest can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

Working together,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

Studebaker Rd Project Latest Update

Those living near Studebaker Rd. may have recently received notice in the mail regarding upcoming work on the Studebaker Rd. Complete Streets project, which spans from Carson St. to 2nd St, that is planned to start this month.

The project will include rehabilitation and maintenance to work to create smoother roads and extend the life of the pavements, along with reconstruction/addition of ADA-compliant curb ramps and sidewalks, upgraded bike infrastructure to improve safety and connectivity, safer crosswalks and intersections designed to reduce speeding, updated traffic signals for improved traffic flow, improved transit stops, and expanded, landscaped medians to enhance safety and streetscape. Work can be expected Monday – Friday between 7am and 4pm, and work will be completed in phases in an effort to limit traffic flow disruptions. Be aware of potential impacts and temporary access limitations to intersections along Studebaker, however at least one travel lane in each direction will remain open during construction.

The project is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete, with planned completion by late 2027, pending weather or unforeseen circumstances. For urgent matters during construction activities, please contact Jorge Ortega at 951-757-8056. Visit longbeach.gov/studebakerproject to learn more and sign up for direct updates.
