Public Works
Green Bin Distribution for Thurs/Fri Collection to begin Sept 22
The Residential Organics Collection program rollout has reached its final phase of cart distribution, as residents with Thursday and Friday collection days will be receiving their green organics bins beginning on September 22. As a reminder, your cart may be delivered up to 2.5 weeks before service begins. While your cart may arrive early, please remember that collection will not begin until October 9th or October 10th, depending on your regular service day.
While residents cannot “opt out” of this State-mandated service, the City is offering carts in 3 sizes (95-gallon, 65-gallon, or 35-gallon) to help residents find the right size for their household, which can help reduce spills, contaminations, and costs. For more details on how to request a different bin size, guidelines on what goes into the cart, as well as tips on how to keep it clean, visit longbeach.gov/LBOrganics or call 562-570-2876 with any further questions.
With this final phase of cart distribution, the Public Works team thanks residents for their continued patience through this transition. Change never comes without challenges, but Public Works is working diligently to increase staffing and bring new collection trucks online to better serve our neighborhoods. In the meantime, they ask residents to keep in mind the following reminders and tips to help the process run as smoothly as possible.
-
Missed Pick-ups: Place your carts at the curb by 6am on collection. Please allow until 6pm for pickup to happen; the crews may still be on the way. If after 6pm, collection has not occurred, you can complete the form online at lbcity.info/ReportForm. Residents are advised to leave the carts out in their service area (curb or alley) and collection will occur the following day.
-
New Routes and Pick-up times: Truck routes are being optimized, and pick-up windows may vary from those you are used to. Please set your carts by 6am on your collection day to avoid service interruptions.
-
Contamination and inaccessible carts protocol: When drivers observe contamination in carts or an area is inaccessible, they will place a tag on the carts. This will inform residents as to why their carts were not serviced. These tags are intended to improve communication, so customers understand the cause of the missed collection and know that we are working to return and service the cart as soon as possible.

Street Work in CD5
Studebaker Rd Complete Streets Update
Progress on the Studebaker Rd Complete Streets project is forthcoming, as construction work is planned to begin this fall. Throughout September, the project’s prep work will continue, with pothole spot repair, surveying, traffic control planning, and other necessary pre-construction work. Construction is scheduled to start in November 2025, with a general completion goal of Fall 2027, barring delays due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. At this time, we do not know which segment of Studebaker will be worked on first, but we will share more details in future newsletters as we learn more from Public Works. In the meantime, check out the updated project website for more details on the street transformation project, aimed to improve safety, accessibility, and mobility along the more than 5-mile long corridor.

Clark Ave Complete Streets Phase 1 Update
Next week, those living and driving in the area will also see movement on the Clark Ave Complete Streets project, as surveying for phase one of the complete street project (from Spring St. to Conant St.) is scheduled to begin next week. Construction work will follow soon after; keep an eye out in future newsletters for more details as we hear from Public Works. In the meantime, learn more about the multi-phased street transformation at the project website.

Parks, Recreation, & Marine
Tree Removal at Heartwell Park
Earlier this week, a broken branch stuck within a tree at Heartwell Park West (Area 1) resulted in the area being caution-taped off for safety. Upon further inspection, it was determined the tree will need to be removed due to multiple issues that cannot be remedied by pruning. Routine tree assessments throughout the park this week have determined 7 additional trees whose conditions warrant removal. Please see the findings linked below for more information. The work is scheduled to begin next week; a banner has been posted on the corner of Carson and Bellflower to inform park patrons of the upcoming work.
As it is always upsetting to lose a park tree, my team and I are advocating to the PRM Department and the Office of Sustainability to have new trees planted at Heartwell when planting season begins and the trees have the best chance to thrive.

Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Communications
September is National Preparedness Month!
The City of Long Beach is recognizing National Preparedness Month this September by promoting educational campaigns that encourage personal, household, and community emergency preparedness. Disasters and emergencies can happen at any time; it’s important to stay prepared!
This year’s theme “Preparedness Starts at Home,” urges residents to take four key actions to prep for a disaster or major emergency:
Additionally, the City is relaunching the Ready Your Long Beach Neighborhood (RYLBN) program, where City Disaster Preparedness staff will provide resources, support, and training to neighborhood group representatives and equip them with the skills to lead their neighbors through the development of a Neighborhood Response Plan. Such a plan outlines actions neighbors should take to stay safe immediately after a disaster before first responders may arrive, inventories neighborhood skills and equipment, and creates a confidential neighbor contact list to remain connected and informed. Learn more in the recent press release.
Keep an eye out for upcoming Emergency Prep events next month, such as the return of READY Long Beach, a free community preparedness expo taking place on Sunday, Oct. 12th from 9am – 2pm at the Vets Stadium parking lot, and the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on Thursday, Oct. 16th. Review the recent press release to learn more.
