Weekly Updates & Summer Fun

Happy Friday, District 5! The Paris 2024 Olympics are officially underway! I hope you’re able to take some time over the weekend to root for our athletes from all over the country as they compete on the world’s stage. Keep an eye out for athletes and coaches from Long Beach, and get pumped to root them on right here at home in four years!

As the City Council resumes our regular Council Meeting schedule in August, we will be jumping right into budget conversations for Fiscal Year ‘25 (FY25). A memo to the City Council earlier this week outlines the schedule for the budget hearings and meetings throughout the coming weeks before adoption in September. The Proposed FY25 Budget will be released on August 1st and presented to the Council at the first Budget Hearing on August 6th. Review the recent memo to learn more and keep an eye out in these newsletters for updates throughout the budget cycle.

This Saturday, July 27th, I hope you’ll take advantage of some great citywide events in and around CD5! You can start the morning off with the LBPD’s next Etch & Catch event at the North Division Station (4891 Atlantic Ave) from 8am – 1pm. Then, I encourage all who are interested to head over to the Long Beach Airport from 10am – 3pm for the Grand Reopening of the Historic Terminal, which has been closed for over a year for extensive renovations and restoration. Finally, you can finish the day off strong by spending time at LBCC’s Summerfest & Drone Show from 4pm – 9pm, to connect with neighbors and resources, and to witness the light show after dark! See the flyers below to learn more.

Though summer seems to be flying by, there are still a number of future events and engagement opportunities to look forward to! Next weekend, you can join neighbors at the 13th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival, on Saturday, August 3rd at Houghton Park. The following week, help make the community a safer place by participating in a National Night Out event with LBPD on August 6th, or by stopping by the Miller Family Health Education Center on Friday, August 9th for a free Car Seat Safety Check Up. Don’t forget to save the date for our 2nd Annual Discover LBCC Community Concert, brought to you by our office in collaboration with LBCC, on Friday, August 16th! Connect with neighbors, enjoy some live music, and find what makes LBCC such a great resource, right here in the heart of District 5. See the flyers below for more details on these and other upcoming events.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be on Tuesday, August 6th at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest will be provided in a future newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

The work continues,

City Seeks Donations to Support People Experiencing Homelessness During Warm Summer Months

As part of Long Beach’s ongoing commitment to support people experiencing homelessness in Long Beach, the City will offer its 12th charitable giving opportunity for community members who wish to make a material difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

The Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) will host a donation drive thru on Saturday, July 27, 2024, to collect essential items to distribute. The drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Health Department’s Main Facilities Center (2525 Grand Ave.). Donations received will be distributed at the Multi-Service Center (MSC) and will also be available to local partner organizations to distribute.

For this quarter’s donation drive, the City kindly requests items from a list that you can read more about in the City's Press Release. While gift cards will not be accepted at the drive-thru event, they can be donated at the MSC. To schedule a drop-off time, people can call 562.570.4586.

Donation Drop-Off Bins

Donation drop off bins remain available at a variety of locations citywide and are a quick and easy way to donate essential physical items that can make an impact on someone’s daily life. Bins are located at all open Long Beach Public Library locations during regular business hours, as well as at the below locations:

  • Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach (3635 Long Beach Blvd.), Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Scherer Park Community Center, (4654 Pasadena Ave.), Monday through Friday 3 to 6 p.m.

Requesting Donations

The City continues to provide local organizations that support people experiencing homelessness a portion of the donated items to help further their organization’s mission. Local organizations interested in receiving donations can request items online.
