Weekly Updates & Welcome June

Happy Friday, District 5! With the arrival of June, and some “June gloom” along with it, the warm and sunny days of summer are on the horizon! Keep reading for plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the sunshine with the community this weekend and beyond, but first, a brief note business.

The Council item pertaining to the Traffic Signal Synchronization Program (TSSP) Project along Woodruff Ave was pulled from last week’s agenda, but the updated Item 23 will be voted on at the upcoming meeting on June 11th. See below for more information. Also, the City has also published a new website pertaining to Elevate '28 (Measure A) infrastructure projects. I encourage you to visit the site to learn more about the City's Infrastructure Investment Plan for FY 23 to FY 27; in the coming weeks, we will share more updates within CD5.

I'd like to take a moment to congratulate Tracy's Bar & Grill on their milestone anniversary of 25 years of business! Bring family, friends, and neighbors to help them celebrate this Sunday, June 9th, at their 25th Anniversary Celebration; see details in the flyer below.

For more activities and events within CD5 this weekend, there’s a wide variety to choose from! You can support the arts by seeing one of the Long Beach Shakespeare Company’s New Works, or by attending the Bob Ross–themed First Fridays Art Walk in Bixby Knolls tonight, along with the Open House of Able ARTS Work’s new space on Atlantic Ave. Tomorrow, June 8th, you can join Parkview Village’s Second Saturdays Block Party from 11 – 3 to engage with neighbors, enjoy family-friendly activities, and support local small businesses. At LBX this weekend, you can enjoy a variety of kid-approved activities and vendors to celebrate “International Kids Day” on Saturday, June 8th, or head over to pick out a Father’s Day gift at the “Rad Dad Maker Market” on Sunday, June 9th. See the flyers below for details, and for even more events throughout CD5!

Though summer is already on its way, you can maintain the spirit of spring cleaning by volunteering with a local Clean Streets team, or by recycling old tires and e-waste at one of the Conservation Corps of Long Beach’s free drop off events this weekend! See the flyers below to learn more.

Finally, I’d like to remind you that the next City Council meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11th at 5pm in the City Hall Chambers. A list of items of interest will can be found at the bottom of this newsletter. I encourage you to attend or watch online.

As always, I am grateful for your continued engagement with me and my office, and I look forward to seeing you out in the community.

The work continues,

Megan Kerr, Councilwoman

Community News & Updates

Long Beach Community Investment Company

1131 E Wardlow Rd.

This week, our office was made aware that the West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (WHCHC) is in the process of acquiring the permit to begin the demolition of the existing building located on the Long Beach Community Investment Company's property at 1131 E Wardlow Rd.

The demolition is expected to begin this summer, and we will be provided with a more precise timeline and answers to FAQs on what to expect throughout the demolition process.

While plans for the proposed development of the site are still in flux, early demolition of the existing property is recommended to mitigate potential problems and reduce the risk of the site becoming a neighborhood nuisance. Our office will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Public Works Department

Traffic Signal Synchronization Program (TSSP), Woodruff Ave

Item 23 on the upcoming City Council Agenda (June 11, 2024) is a request from Public Works staff to execute an Agreement with the County of Los Angeles to implement a Traffic Signal Synchronization Program (TSSP) Project along Woodruff Ave, from Willow St to Rosecrans Ave (in City of Bellflower).

TSSP Projects involve upgrading all traffic signals along a route to keep the signals synchronized.

Coordinating and adjusting the timing of the signals between adjacent intersections will facilitate the movement of vehicles through the intersections along Woodruff Avenue.

Upgrades include, but are not limited to, new vehicle detection systems, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Universal Time Base units, traffic signal poles, mast arms, additional Light Emitting Diode (LED) vehicle signal heads for new protected/permissive left-turn signal phases, and 2070 traffic signal controllers.

Other improvements will enhance pedestrian safety, including new ADA-compliant curb ramps, high-visibility continental crosswalks, pedestrian push buttons, LED countdown pedestrian signal heads, and LED street lighting.
