Your District 7 Newsletter:
The Festive Edition
VOLUME 17 | Nov. 21, 2017
Dear Neighbors,
I want to tell you how thankful I am for the opportunity to serve you and your neighbors in District 7. To work on your behalf, to make the community I grew up in stronger, is a gift.

On Thanksgiving Day, when it’s my turn at the table to say what I’m thankful for, it’s going to take a while.

While we have a lot of needs in District 7, from drainage and sidewalks to senior services, we also have a lot of hard-working residents who care deeply about their neighborhoods and our city. Most of us look out for one another. We check on in our older neighbors. We help out those in need, either directly or through charitable donations.

I am blessed to represent you on City Council.

Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you, too, have much to be thankful for.
Yours in public service,
P.S. The District 7 Office will be open until noon Wednesday, November 22nd and will be closed November 23rd and 24th in observance of Thanksgiving.

Metro Health's ¡Viva Health! Tips
Thanksgiving, beyond the historical significance, is also associated with over-eating - whether attending more than one get-together or having second and third servings, on this day the turkey is not the only one feeling stuffed. With that in mind the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) is sharing some tips to help you and your family make healthy choices this thanksgiving day.

  • Use simple substitutes while cooking:
  • Instead of using sugar, consider using a low-calorie sugar substitute.
  • Use whole-grain breads and pastas.
  • Instead of whole milk or heavy cream, try low-fat or skim milk.
  • Bake, grill or steam vegetables instead of frying.
  • Be creative and add some fresh herbs and salt-free spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice or onion, garlic or chili powder.
  • When entertaining, use smaller dinner plates, that are less than 9 inches in diameter
  • When creating your plate, choose your veggies first, and fill half your plate with fruits and veggies.
  • Take a walk with family and friends before and after your meal.
  • Get enough rest.
  • If you have a sweet treat, cut back on other carbs (like potatoes and bread) during the meal.
  • Don’t skip meals to save up for a feast. It will be harder to keep your blood sugar in control, and you’ll be really hungry and more likely to overeat.
  • If you slip up, get right back to healthy eating with your next meal.
  • Eat slowly. It takes at least 20 minutes for your brain to realize you’re full.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol. If you do have an alcoholic drink, have it with food.

And remember the three ¡Viva Health! messages:
  1. Fill half your plate with fruits and veggies, every meal, every day.
  2. For portion control, use a smaller plate.
  3. Drink water, not sugary drinks.

Eat well; feel great, every season of the year! For information and materials on the ¡Viva Health! Campaign, visit: http://www.sanantonio.gov/Health/VivaHealth

Join the Braun Oaks Neighborhood on December 4th for the final Blue Santa Toy Drive Final Pick Up. The final pick up is scheduled for 6 to 6:30 PM at the Braun Oaks Club House, 10555 Tezel Rd. Kids welcome.

The Blue Santa Program was created to help bring holiday happiness to families and children throughout San Antonio. Blue Santa is all about bringing hope and joy to families that struggle to make ends meet during the toughest times of the year: the holidays. Police officers are in a unique position to see the struggles families endure throughout the year. The San Antonio Police Officers Association (SAPOA) recognized these difficulties and began partnering with community companies and volunteers to collect food, clothes, toys, and monetary donations to assist thousands of families in our city.
