Dear Alumni, RAMP members and friends of the DAAD,
This year Germany and Australia celebrate 40 years of scientific and technological cooperations. Germany and Australia have established longstanding, firm and friendly science and technology cooperation between the two countries that has allowed collaboration to flourish since the signature of the Australia-Germany Treaty on Science and Technology Cooperation in 1976. As this newsletter shows, the opportunities in academia and research are continuing to be diverse and innovative. With this newsletter, we would like to keep you informed about deadlines, current scholarships and interesting events.
Also, we would like to remind everyone about the upcoming deadline of the DAAD scholarship for University Winter Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates ("Hochschulwinterkurs") on 15 August 2017.

EU and Australia one step closer to launching trade negotiations
|
|
EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and Australia’s Minister for Trade, Investment and Tourism, Steven Ciobo, (pictured here in a previous meeting) in a phone call concluded discussions on the scope of a potential bilateral free trade agreement. The preliminary discussions, conducted over the past year between the EU and Australia, aimed to define areas to be covered as well as the level of ambition for a future agreement. The European Commission is currently conducting its assessment of the potential impact that such a trade deal could have for the EU. The study takes into account the agreed scope, new opportunities the agreement could create for EU businesses, as well as sensitivities in the farming sector. As a next step, the Commission will ask Member States for the authorisation to launch formal negotiations and for the specific negotiating directives. Read more

DAAD Scholarship:
Hochschulwinterkurs/ University Winter Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates

The University Winter Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates is one of the longstanding scholarships available in Australia. This scholarship is particularly interesting for all undergraduate students whose studies are related to Germany. Moreover, the scholarship is also relevant for graduates and PhD candidates who intend to conduct parts of their studies and research in Germany, and therefore want to connect with German language and culture should not miss this opportinity to for January 2018.

Who can apply?
This study program is aimed to help to improve the knowledge of German (general language, special language) and their cultural knowledge of the country. Applications are open to students in Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes as well as doctoral candidates in any subject area; Bachelor students must have completed at least two academic years at the start of the scholarship period.
Important: changes to language certificate
Please note that since this year it is crucial to hold a language certificate for at least B1 level at hand, issued by one of the following institutions: onDaF, TestDaF, Goethe Institut (Melbourne, Sydney), DSD, DSH, telc Deutsch.

Falling Walls Lab Australia

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian researchers, postdocs and students, entrepreneurs, engineers and innovators from all areas to attend Australia’s Falling Walls Lab in 2017.
Falling Walls Lab Australia will be held on 12 September 2017 at the Shine Dome, Canberra. Twenty Australian and five New Zealand/Pacific Island Forum (PIF) Nations contestants will be invited to participate in the challenge, each giving a three-minute presentation on their research, business model or initiative based on the ‘Which walls will fall next?’ concept. Candidates should be research active in any field of the natural sciences, including technology, engineering and medicine, as well as social sciences and the humanities

Australia - Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme

A new round of the Australia-Germany Joint Research Co-operation Scheme is now open for applications.
Administered nationally since 2015 by Universities Australia with partner organisation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme has already funded over 170 collaborative research projects.
Chief Executive Belinda Robinson said that research was increasingly international and programs like this one were important to keeping Australia connected to the global research community.
"Germany is well-known as one of the world's leading research-intensive countries and has an excellent reputation for international research collaboration," said Universities Australia Chief Executive Belinda Robinson.
“After the United States and the United Kingdom, Germany ranks third for joint research publications with Australian universities, so it’s vital for Australian researchers to make connections with their German counterparts,” she said.
The DAAD is the largest funding organisation in the world supporting the international exchange of students and scholars.
The scheme funds travel and living costs, enabling Australian researchers to spend time in Germany working alongside their German counterparts and bringing
German researchers to Australia to work in local research institutions.
“For many Australian universities, Germany is already one of the top priority countries for international research collaboration. And we are delighted that 35 of Australia’s universities have decided to take part in the scheme this year.”
The scheme is open to Australian researchers at participating Australian universities in all academic fields involved in a collaborative project with German research partners.
Since the first round in 2015, this scheme has funded 172 collaborative projects at a total investment by the DAAD and Australian universities of around AUD $6 million.
Applications are open until 16 June 2017. The scheme acknowledges the support of the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.

The Höffmann Academic Award
for Intercultural Competence 2017
|

The Höffmann Academic Award for Intercultural Competence, sponsored by the Vechta-based travel company Höffmann Reisen GmbH, is conferred annually by the University of Vechta. The award comes with a cash prize of € 10,000.
The Höffmann Academic Award is part of a long-term programme aimed at promoting intercultural skills, which are the key to peaceful and constructive co-operation between people of various ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Intercultural competence enables us to identify common ground and to learn from our characteristic features. In many ways, intercultural issues are an integral element of academic research for numerous disciplines.
The aim of the Höffmann Academic Award is to support the endeavours of an outstanding academic
by awarding a prize to groundbreaking work carried out on topics of intercultural competence. Such
work can concentrate on exploring the topic from the perspective of a single discipline or it may be
interdisciplinary in nature.
Nominations are made by proposals put forward by the management of a university or research
institution. Candidates are not permitted to nominate themselves.
Nominations should contain the following:
- Detailed grounds for the proposal
- Two expert opinions, each by proven university lecturers
- A curriculum vitae in tabular form with a photograph of the nominee
- A list of his/her previous publications.
Nominations and documents can be submitted in English or German.
The guidelines on the conferring of the award and other information are published on the University
of Vechta’s homepage (
www.uni-vechta.de). A panel of judges decides on the conferring of the award. Its decision is final.
The academic award is presented at a public award ceremony at the University of Vechta
planned for January 2018.

Master in Cultural Relations and Migration (M.A.) at the SFU Berlin (60 ECTS)
The Sigmund Freud University Berlin (SFU) offers the postgraduate Master Programme „Cultural Relations and Migration“ (Kulturelle Beziehungen und Migration) in academic year 2016/2017.
This German-English programme combines theory, practice and empirical research on cultural relations and migration. Diversity education and psychosocial approaches to working with refugees, language politics and migration and globalisation are part of the curriculum. Participants study in an international and interdisciplinary study group and qualify for work in international and diverse settings. Applications are now open.
