With this newsletter we would like to keep you informed about the latest news, deadlines and interesting upcoming events in Australia, such as the 'German Language Day' on 19 August 2017 in Croydon / Sydney, an event showcasing German Institutions in Sydney where DAAD Australia will be represented as well.
Dr. Ada Bieber, who has been serving as director of the DAAD Information Centre in Sydney since the beginning of 2016, will leave Sydney in August and return to Germany to take on a new position in academia. "It was an energetic and exciting time in Sydney", Ada says, "and I am thankful to many people and opportunities. Most of all, I want to thank Elisabeth Meister, Silke Schoppe and Christina Gärtner for being a wonderful team at the Information Centre. I also thank Consul General Freischlader, Sonja Griegoschweski, Director of the Goethe-Institut and, last but not least, the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Sydney for fruitful collaboration, support and interesting projects."
The Information Centre will continue to run as usual with Silke Schoppe and Christina Gärtner.
Last but not least, we would like to draw your attention to the new upcoming DAAD Australia webpage which will be launched in the next days. You will then find all information on www.daad-australia.de Please feel free to spread the word, especially among students and colleagues! Also, we would like to remind everyone about the upcoming deadline of the DAAD scholarship for University Winter Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates ("Hochschulwinterkurs") on 15 August 2017

Seeking a new RAMP mentoring scheme Coordinator
|
|
|
The Australian Association of von Humboldt Fellows and the DAAD are seeking a part-time Coordinator for their joint RAMP (Research Ambassador and Mentoring Scheme) initiative which provides mentoring to early-career researchers in Australia, particularly those with an interest in establishing or furthering research links with German-based researchers. The position will fit an individual with interests in scholarly research in all disciplines and in early career researcher development. The position is for 2 hours per week for 1 year in the first instance, with a possibility for renewal. Renumeration will be paid at $50 hr. The primary tasks are communicating with current and potential mentors and mentees, establishing and managing mentoring pairs and promoting the program. There is potential to further develop the program. The RAMP Coordinator will be encouraged to attend national RAMP meetings (usually annually), as well as local meetings, where possible. The RAMP Coordinator will be supervised by the RAMP Management Committee based in Sydney and there is the option of working remotely. German Parliament approves same-sex marriage
|

EU and Australia leaders meet at G20 in Hamburg
|
|
Trade and global security were on the agenda in Hamburg in the margins of the G20 summit when Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had a trilateral meeting with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. President Tusk tweeted after the meeting, ''agreed with PM Turnbull to accelerate work towards EU-Australia FTA as a priority''. Meanwhile, the European Commission's Chief Spokesman, Margaritis Schinas, touched on foreign relations in his twitter coverage of the meeting, "@JunckerEU @eucopresident meet PM @TurnbullMalcolm. EU and #Australia strategic partners in the global agenda. #G20". The EU's leaders, together with Australia, were firmly united in the implementation of the Paris agreement despite the recent US decision. Leaders also reached consensus on the fight against terrorism as well as women's empowerment and promoting digitalisation.

German Language Day in Sydney

Supported by the German Consulate General, meet German language schools and universities such as German International School Sydney, Goethe-Institut Sydney, Deutschstunde Sydney, German Saturday School, FROEBEL Kindergarten, University of Sydney, University of Technology, the German-Australian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the German National Tourist Office and the DAAD.
Showcasing the different organisations will be followed by a panel discussion looking at bilingualism.

German Films and Aboriginal Cultures.
Where the Green Ants Dream (Werner Herzog, 1984) is a story about an Australian mining company which is about to set up a uranium mining operation in lands long occupied by Aboriginal people. The life cycle of the green ants is also the cycle of life on earth. Mining will disrupt it and bring about an apocalypse.

Extraordinary women in history
|
Three outstanding pioneers represent the achievements of women in the fields of science and technology: The double Nobel Prize winner and discoverer of radioactivity Marie Curie (1867-1934), the Austrian-Swedish nuclear physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968) and the Viennese Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr (1914-2000) with the invention of frequency hopping. Incidents of their lives, achievements and impediments as well as the contents of their research and the passion for their work are at the centre of the theatre play “Curie_Meitner_Lamarr_indivisible“, produced by the Viennese portraittheater. Illustrated with music and videos, the performance shows within 95 minutes an entertaining portrait of extraordinary women in history.
The theatre performance, directed by Sandra Schüddekopf, with Anita Zieher impersonating the three women was a great success in Austria and has already toured in Belgium, Germany, Iran, Poland, Switzerland, Romania and the USA.

Translating the Untranslatable: Poetry in Translation
Monash University’s fifth Literary Translation Spring School is run by the Translation & Interpreting Studies program, and is aimed at students, writers, professional translators, language teachers and anyone interested in literary translation! A 3-day residential program of hands-on translation practice is accompanied by discussions on the topic of translating poetry. We also offer exciting networking opportunities with other translators, writers, publishers and academics. Daily translation workshops are led by an expert translator together with the author of the text to be translated.

The University Winter Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates is one of the longstanding scholarships available in Australia. This scholarship is particularly interesting for all undergraduate students whose studies are related to Germany. Moreover, the scholarship is also relevant for graduates and PhD candidates who intend to conduct parts of their studies and research in Germany, and therefore want to connect with German language and culture should not miss this opportinity to for January 2018.

Who can apply?
This study program is aimed to help to improve the knowledge of German (general language, special language) and their cultural knowledge of the country. Applications are open to students in Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes as well as doctoral candidates in any subject area; Bachelor students must have completed at least two academic years at the start of the scholarship period.
