Dear DAAD Friends and Alumni!🎓

Welcome to our Autumn Edition of the DAAD Australia Newsletter.

Last month Sydney celebrated the 90th anniversary of its famous harbour bridge and marked this jubilee with special events.

A bridge can be more than a beautiful landmark, it is also a symbol that represents communication and connections between people.

In this newsletter you will read how bridges can be created in a meaningful way to overcome obstacles and to connect people and places across the world.

It includes information and updates on our key topics:

● A newly built DAAD platform for Ukrainian refugee students and researchers as an academic contact point of support.

● The latest DAAD Policy Talk about 'Science Diplomacy' and what it can achieve in times of war.

● The redesigned website 'Study-in-Germany' - the gateway for international students and researchers to Germany.

● The last edition of the DAAD Podcast 'Campus Europa': How can European University Alliances cooperate across borders and overcome hurdles?

● Offers of German universities on study programmes and summer schools for international students.

These are only a few of the topics covered in our DAAD Australia Autumn Newsletter 2022. We hope you will enjoy reading this edition.

New DAAD website
for Ukrainian refugee students and researchers
Now online:
The National Academic Contact Point Ukraine.

To support refugee students and academics from Ukraine, the DAAD launched a comprehensive online contact point this month. On the new website, those affected can find all the relevant information on access to higher education and offers to help.
At the official launch of the website, DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee said: “We currently assume that up to 100,000 Ukrainian students and researchers will need support and academic prospects in Germany in the near future. This requires adequately funded support programmes and a central academic information point for Ukrainians.”
The new website is available in German, English and Ukrainian language.

DAAD KIWi Policy Talk:
'Science Diplomacy in Times of War'
What to do for Ukraine, how to go on with Belarus and Russia?

The DAAD Competence Centre for International Academic Collaborations (KIWi) hosted an online policy talk with experts on Eastern Europe last month. The topic of the public discussion was about 'science diplomacy' and what it can achieve in times of war.
The talk was opened by DAAD President Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee and addressed the following questions, among others:
  • What is the current situation of students and scientists from Ukraine and what kind of measures are required to help them?
  • What is the assessment of the situation in Russia and what medium and long-term stances can German universities take in their dealings with Russia and Belarus?
  • What does science diplomacy mean in times of war, and what will this demand of us in the foreseeable future?

Website with New Design:
Study in Germany - Land of Ideas
Study-in-Germany.de
#HelloGermany

The online platform Study-in-Germany presents information and services in a new design to raise awareness of Germany as an excellent location for higher education studies. The redesigned website is supposed to attract prospective students and graduates to apply for studies or PhDs in Germany. It will also boost the number of highly qualified international students at German higher education institutions.
The campaign motto #HelloGermany states in an array of bright colours that Germany welcomes international students with open arms and encourages them to say „Hello“ to Germany. The initiative is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and conducted by the DAAD.

‘So many countries - so many rules.
Removing barriers and finding solutions!’

The European University Alliances cooperate across borders to realise the vision of a European University. A barrier-free European space in the future would benefit cross-border collaboration in the field of studies and research.
The 10th episode of DAAD's Campus Europa podcast features the EURECA-PRO (TU Bergakademie Freiberg and Mittweida University of Applied Sciences) and NeurotechEU (University of Bonn) alliances in a political discussion on how they can overcome regulatory hurdles and develop pragmatic solutions.
This is the last episode of the #DAAD podcast series ‘Campus Europa’

Research in Germany - April Newsletter
Academic Freedom Index 2022:
Germany in the lead!

This year’s update of the Academic Freedom Index (AFI) provides an overview of the state of academic freedom in 177 countries and territories. The AFI is the result of a collaborative research project led by researchers in Sweden and Germany.
The index rests on five key indicators:
  • the freedom to research and teach,
  • the freedom of academic exchange and dissemination,
  • the institutional autonomy of universities,
  • the campus integrity,
  • and the freedom of academic and cultural expression.
The 2022 update of the Academic Freedom Index holds some excellent news for researchers in Germany as the country ranks first place. But at the same time there is also an alarming negative trend showing that academic freedom is under pressure in an increasing number of countries and territories around the world.
