DAAD Anniversary
Building Bridges in Global Academia
For a century, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been a driving force in fostering international academic exchange. As it celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025, the DAAD reflects on a legacy of supporting over three million students and researchers from Germany, Europe, and beyond.
"For 100 years, the DAAD has been promoting the international exchange of students, teachers and researchers - a task that is more important today than ever before," said DAAD President Prof. Dr Joybrato Mukherjee in Bonn. In a world marked by conflicts and international tensions, the DAAD creates space for dialogue and academic cooperation. "Especially in geopolitically turbulent times, the academic networks created by the work of the DAAD are indispensable," Mukherjee added.
The centennial celebration will feature events worldwide, highlighting the DAAD’s impact on education and research. Join us in commemorating this milestone and exploring the future of global academic exchange.

A Compass for the Future of Internationalisation
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) released its new Strategy 2030 in Bonn with the beginning of the new year. In the centenary year since its founding, it is focussing on the immense geopolitical changes and responding to them with a foreign science realpolitik in order to represent the interests of German universities and strengthen Germany as a science and business destination.
"We are living in an era of profound change, characterised by shifts in the international order and accompanied by major global challenges," said DAAD President Prof. Dr Joybrato Mukherjee in Bonn. "This state of change is challenging us: we need to think in a science-based and transnational way in order to secure the standing of Germany and its universities in the global academic system. At the same time, we want and need to work with as many international partners as possible to find evidence-based solutions to the pressing challenges facing our planet," continued Mukherjee.
Over the next five years, the DAAD will therefore be focussing on four priorities:
- strengthening Germany as a location for science, innovation and business
- finding solutions to global challenges
- expanding science diplomacy
- and promoting democracy and social cohesion
According to the DAAD President, these priorities form the basis for the strategic goals until the end of the decade.

Financial Challenges at the DAAD

DAAD discontinues 13 programmes
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is responding to persistently high cost pressure in Germany and around the world. In order to meet the challenges, the DAAD is cutting 13 scholarship and university internationalisation programmes. Around 2,500 scholarships will be cancelled each year.
"We are facing major financial challenges at the DAAD. For example, we are confronted with sharply rising costs in Germany and worldwide, such as personnel, IT and rental costs. We are also under additional financial pressure due to a point that is in itself a positive development: scholarship rates for foreign students and doctoral candidates who come to Germany have risen by 34 per cent in the last ten years without these increases being offset. These cost increases require well thought-out and effective measures in order to remain viable in our central funding areas of scholarships and university cooperation. Accordingly, we have launched a consolidation programme to ensure that we are crisis-proof for the future in the centenary year of the DAAD's existence," said DAAD President Prof. Dr Joybrato Mukherjee in Bonn last month.
As part of the consolidation, the DAAD is discontinuing 13 programmes that were previously funded by the Federal Foreign Office.

Genius or Charlatan? Ferdinand von Sommer | |
|
Professor Alexandra Ludewig, traced the life of the 19th-century polymath who left a trail of controversy across colonial
Australia:
Today, much of Western Australia's vast landscape is closely associated with mining. However, back in 1847, the colony could only aspire to "share in the mineral wealth of Australia." In response, the government appointed its first official geologist, Ferdinand von Sommer, a "mineralogist of eminence."
Less than a year after his appointment, von Sommer found himself aboard a ship bound for the Dutch East Indies, fleeing accusations that he was "a mere charlatan" involved in "suspicious activities related to supposed mineral research and discovery."
Who was this mysterious figure, and how did his endeavors go so wrong? Alexandra Ludewig delved into von Sommer's story by exploring archives across Poland and South Africa. She uncovered the life of a true polymath who studied mathematics under the renowned Carl Friedrich Gauss, worked as a doctor, served as a missionary, and practiced as a mining engineer.
Read the article by Prof. Alexandra Ludewig, Head of the School of Humanities at The University of Western Australia and DAAD Research Ambassador in the CONVERSATION.
Listen to Alexandra's interview Geologist and more: the multi-faceted genius who was loathed and revered in colonial Australia on ABC Late Night Live.
