Important Information About Pertussis
Important Notice to Parents

Your child may have been exposed to Pertussis (also known as "whooping cough" at Delaware Area Career Center. The following information and instructions were drafted by the Delaware General Health District. Click here for more information on Pertussis.

Pertussis is a cough illness that begins like a common cold with runny nose, sneezing, low-grade fever and mild cough for 1-2 weeks. The cough will then worsen over the next few weeks and may last for up to three months. The cough at this stage occurs more frequently at night. Often a young child will make a "whooping" sound as they try to get their breath between coughs. However, older children and adults may not have this "whopping" sound as their airways are larger.

The time it takes for the disease to develop after exposure is usually 5-10 days but can be as late as 21 days. Even if your child has received all of their required immunizations, they are still at risk for this disease. If your child is currently experiencing these symptoms we recommend that you contact your child's physician to determine if testing and/or medication is indicated. The best way to prevent pertussis is to get vaccinated.

Please notify school health clinic if your child has been diagnosed with Pertussis. Please call us immediately if your child has signed an exemption and is not up to date on immunizations at 740-203-2212.
