ENGAGING COMMUNICATIONS ARE DRIVEN BY INTELLIGENT PLANNING
Sheri Dougherty
 Dr. Sherilyne Dougherty, CEO

A communications plan is a critical part of an engagement strategy. An effective plan starts with the end in mind. Based upon your desired outcome, it describes how messages and communications channels will be used to reach target audiences and drive them to behaviors that will achieve your goals. In this month's Advisor, we outline a few best practices for ensuring your communications plan has the desired effect.

We also recap my participation on an entrepreneurship panel at the Florida GovCon Summit in Tampa, which brought small businesses together to discuss tactics and lessons learned in winning federal contracts.

Finally, we are proud to announce that we are a part of a winning team for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Program Management, Administrative, Operations, and Technical Services (PACTS II) contract. Read on to learn how we'll be using our expertise as a boutique management consulting firm to help DHS achieve its mission.

FIND THE RIGHT AUDIENCE TO SHARPEN YOUR COMMUNICATIONS

So you've been tasked with writing a communications plan. Great! It's time to sit down and start thinking through your goals, objectives, tactics and audiences. Although this last term might seem the most basic, I've found it to be the one that is the weakest in many communications plans. Having a poorly or improperly defined audience can stretch your plan too thin, limiting its effectiveness and likely defeating its overall purpose. Here are some key tips to help properly define and identify your audiences to increase the impact of your plan.

In a past life, I had a client who wanted to launch an external communications campaign. Two of her desired audiences were "the media" and "the general public." The problem? Neither of these are audiences.

PLANNING FOR ACTION - CRAFTING A COMMUNICATIONS PLAN THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE

H ow many times have you poured your energy into a plan, communications or otherwise, only to see it
languish on a shelf, lifeless and spent as soon as the ink is dry? A plan can serve a variety of purposes. Sometimes it is just a tool to organize your thoughts; sometimes a place to hold your relevant data, goals and objectives; or sometimes you are just checking a box (in which case maybe it is best to shelve it immediately). But the best plan is a tool that not only defines your goals and objectives, but brings them within reach.

Communications plans can be particularly difficult since communications is such a soft science, but following a few basic principles can lead you to a plan that is meaningful, concise and actionable.

DAI SOLUTIONS A HIT AT FLORIDA GOVCON

DAI Solutions founder and CEO Dr. Sheri Dougherty participated as a featured panelist at the Florida GovCon Summit 2017 on March 29-30 in Tampa, FL. In its second year, the summit endeavored to bring small businesses operating in Florida together under the theme of "Teaming for the Bigger Federal Deals."

"The event exceeded my expectations," Sheri said. "The combination of targeted content, knowledgeable people and established industry connections made for  a very productive few days."
