2019 Fall Conference -
Mission Accomplished!

It’s hard to believe the passage of time. As I write this article, we are transitioning between the scenic Autumn days of the Badger State and the snowy landscape of our famous Wisconsin Winters. Looking forward we are on the verge of the majesty and joy of the holiday season -- however I would like one final glance back into the rear-view mirror.

The 2019 Fall Conference held in Stevens Point was as a phenomenal success. The event itself was totally geared toward providing tools and training for leaders at the Chapter level. Case in point, in 2018 it was shared there was a need for Treasurer Training. In response to that demand, our Department Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer conducted a breakout session which provided insight regarding deadlines, proper forms and documents. Benefits Protection Team Leader training was conducted as well providing the latest update on legislative issues on the State and Federal level. It was stressed the importance of Chapter members contacting their legislators through the Commanders Action Network, attending Town Hall meetings, calling their offices or sending correspondence.

Department leaders shared information on membership, LVAP, Women Veterans issues, Awards, POW-MIA updates and VAVS. As an organization, we are constantly on the move, while maintaining a laser sharp focus on ensuring Veterans lead high quality lives of dignity and respect.

Our Auxiliary was actively engaged throughout the Conference. Elizabeth Honaker, State Auxiliary Commander, provided a moving and inspirational address to the conference delegates stressing the importance of partnering together and providing mutual support between the Chapters and the Units.

We were also graced with the presence of Stephen “Butch” Whitehead, DAV National Commander, who addressed the Conference and was available to speak with our members on an individual basis. Commander Whitehead did an outstanding job of connecting with the members, and it was an honor for us to have him at our event.

I would like to give a “shout out” to Schumann-Heink Chapter 30 of Stevens Point for their support and a Commanders Salute to Larry Hill, Department Adjutant, and Patty Davis, Auxiliary Adjutant. There is an incredible amount of behind the scenes detailed work that is completed to ensure the Conference is set for success.

I would like to close this article on a personal note. Immediately after Fall Conference, my Mother, Anna Hert, fell ill and soon afterwards passed on. In DAV, we talk about the Transportation Network, Veterans Benefits, Job Fairs, etc.  The biggest strength however is the support and comradery of the organization. My spouse, Julie, and I experienced the love and support of my fellow Veterans. Whether it be a phone call, a sympathy card or attending the funeral services, you have touched our hearts and we can never thank you enough. God Bless you all!

FROM THE DAV DEPARTMENT ADJUTANT
LARRY HILL
We now have completed the Department Fall Conference. After reviewing the feedback sheets the conference was rated a 4.5 out of five. Those are excellent results and everyone was impressed with the presentations. Thank your Assistant Adjutant John Polk for Adjutant training, Treasurer Dick Marbes and Assistant Treasurer Rodney Kalata for Treasurer training, Benefits Protection Team Leader (BPTL) Al Labelle for BPTL training, and Commander Mike Hert and Senior Vice Commander Matt Kempainen for Leadership training. Briefings on Saturday morning went well and were informative. A key initiative is LVAP. Make sure you get those hours in and recorded prior to end of year. We can still get that first-place award if we hustle.

I encourage all to get in touch with your legislators and impress upon them that the VA must be held accountable and that there is no excuse for them not complying with law.

Blue Water Navy has been passed and they chose not to accept claims until next calendar year. Pre 9/11 caregiver service program has not been implemented. They’re still figuring out how to best implement the Mission Act and Community Care and on top of that they failed to spend available funds to assist with Suicide prevention. We’ve got to get our legislators involved and keep the VA in line to ensure they support Veterans. We’ve earned our benefits by serving, and it’s time they fulfill their obligation. OK, I’ll get off my soap box.

Finally, start thinking about nominating candidates for the following Awards:
  • Youth Award
  • Outstanding Chapter of the Year
  • Outstanding Chapter Adjutant of the Year
  • Disabled Veteran of the Year
  • Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship
  • George H. Seal Memorial Award

Specific details and rules for these Awards are contained in this Newsletter. We are seeking to have an increase in submitted candidates in each Award category. With your participation we will succeed.

By the time the next newsletter is published the “Hunt” and Thanksgiving will be over. I do sincerely wish those that hunt great success, be safe, and enjoy Thanksgiving with family and friends.
