SEPTEMBER 2024

DEPARTMENT COMMANDER

GREG PALO

Our Fall Conference is coming October 10-12, 2024. Friday’s sessions start with special guests speaking on an array of topics from VAMC to the Brave Program. We are having video presentation from National Convention as well as the Secretary of Veteran Affairs. We are giving training on the new Membership Recruitment Program, Annual Finance Report (AFR), our IRS 990 requirement, myDAV.org and your personal QR-Code. We will have computers (bring your own if you like) and people standing by to help you navigate these programs.

We advocate for benefits congressionally, both federal and state. Our Congressional Leaders listen to a strong constituency voicing a common goal. Not only do they hear us in texts, letters, and emails, but also verbally when we walk their legislative halls. How many of you are members of the ‘Commanders Action Network’ (CAN)? The CAN is a way through email that we voice our desires to our legislators. DAV National writes a letter of concern and addresses it to our legislator for us. All you have to do is agree with the letter and send, edit, or rewrite the letter before sending it.

I have a dream regarding this year’s DAV 5K on Friday, November 8th - Monday, November 11th, 2024. It is a walk, roll, run, and ride event. You can register on-line for the DAV 5K and can participate in-person in Cincinnati or virtually from anywhere you are, a place of your choosing. I have a vision of having 100% of our Chapters in the Department participating in this worthwhile event. Just one participant for the Chapter is all you need, however, comradeship with your fellow Chapter Veterans makes for an enjoyable time. With the Chapters support my dream will come true. This 5K raises awareness of the issues our ill and injured veterans face every day. Join with me in keeping our promise to America’s veterans!

DEPARTMENT ADJUTANT

JOHN POLK

With the Fall Conference only days away, great effort is being put forth to make it a quality event for everyone. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Also, a special thanks to 1st DEC Stan Kogutkiewicz and PDC Gray Meyer for their recent support of the Wisconsin DWD/DET Office of Veteran Employment Services in their Vets Ready Employer Initiative. Stan, Gary and I spent considerable time and effort in recent weeks evaluating applications that were submitted for the Vets Ready Employer recognition. The Vets Ready Employer Initiative serves to encourage employers to build a support system within their workplace, hire and retain more veterans, and connect to veterans in the community and their families. Every year the Department of Workforce Development recognizes businesses who have gone above and beyond for the veteran workforce. I look forward to hearing which employers will be recognized this year.
