Vacation time will no longer be front-loaded at the beginning of the year


You can still request vacation days even if you haven't accrued them yet.

Here's what has changed:

  • Starting now, your allocated vacation time bank will build every two weeks until you reach your full allocation. Vacation allocation info can be found on page 13 of the Employee Handbook.


  • You can request vacation time before you have accrued it, up to 120 hours. In this scenario, your vacation bank will show a negative balance.


  • If you have more than 120 hours of vacation allocated, you will not be able to make all of your vacation requests for the year right now. You will need to wait until later in the year, after you've built up more vacation time in your bank, to finish making your vacation requests.


  • You may only make requests for time away from work (TAFW) - including Professional Development - for dates within the next 6 months. Example: In January, you can request TAFW for any date up to the end of June; in February, you can request TAFW for any date up to the end of July, and so on.


  • If you already know your TAFW plans for the year, you can communicate them with your manager now to receive verbal approval and then enter them in Dayforce later once you are able.

Here's what is staying the same:

  • Sick time, personal days, and professional development hours and funds will remain front-loaded each year.


  • Stat lieu time will be added to your balances as the stat holidays occur.


  • Any time (vacation, lieu, stat lieu) carried over from 2022 will appear in your balances section accurately by the end of January.

Updating the TAFW balances at the start of each year is a manual process. Your patience is appreciated. We are currently reviewing all employees' balances and making adjustments where needed.


Please wait until the end of January to raise any concerns regarding your TAFW balances unless you feel your situation requires urgent attention. Email Marjorie.Smith@HamiltonFHT.ca with your concerns.

A few notes about your schedule:

  • All employees have schedules for January loaded into Dayforce.


  • Approximately 40 employees do not yet have their schedules for February to June loaded. This will be complete by next week.


  • You cannot make TAFW requests or do Activity Reporting on unscheduled days.
