Wednesday, April 30, 11 a.m. EDT. | | Bank of America Private Bank - Market Minute | | Following last Wednesday’s announcement of higher-than-expected tariffs on U.S. imports, the S&P 500 shed 10.5% between Thursday and Friday, marking the worst two-day sell-off for the S&P 500 since March 2020. The index fell 9.1% last week and closed 17% off its February 19 high last Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 10.0% and ended the week in bear market territory. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index closed last Friday at 45.3, the highest level since April 2020. All S&P 500 sectors save for Consumer Staples now stand in the red year-to-date (YTD) with Consumer Discretionary (-20.7%) and Technology (-22.8%) being the biggest laggards. Contributing to the decline, the Magnificent 71 cohort has essentially given back all gains from the last 10 months. Tariff news also hit Equities overseas with the STOXX 600 erasing nearly 70% of its YTD gains last week and entering correction territory on Friday. Treasurys rallied with the yield on the 2-year and 10-year U.S. Treasury each falling 26 basis points (bps) over the week; the latter finished the week just below 4.0% for the first time since October 2024. Though overshadowed by tariff news, last Friday’s jobs report revealed 228,000 jobs added in March, well above expectations at 140,000. | | 2025 Affordable Housing Resources Webinar and Application Assistance | | |
