Bank of America Market Minute

Last week’s mixed earnings reports led to a few big stock moves within the Retail and Technology sectors, as the major indexes pushed higher over the holiday-shortened week. The S&P 500 Index rose 1.5% to its highest level since early September. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 1.8% and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.7% on the week. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX) fell to its lowest level (20.35) in more than three months. Stocks received a boost last Wednesday after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) early-November meeting indicated that a “substantial majority of participants” may have thought slowing the pace of rate hikes could be appropriate. The Fed’s favorite inflation gauge, the core personal consumption expenditures index is due this Thursday, with consensus estimates slightly lower than September’s 5.1% reading. Also due are the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ October personal income and spending reports and the Conference Board release of its Consumer Confidence Index for November. The week will be capped with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ jobs report for November.
