Bank of America Private Bank Market Minute

Powering through Q4 earnings releases, a Federal Reserve (Fed) policy decision and a surprise job’s report, the S&P 500 and NASDAQ built on their year-todate rallies last week. The S&P 500 rose 1.6% while the NASDAQ gained 3.3% amid earnings releases from several Big Tech giants. The Communication Services and Technology sectors rose the most, up 5.3% and 3.8% respectively. Energy lost the most at 5.9% for the week. Markets anticipated and applauded the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision to raise the federal funds rate by 25 basis points (bps) to a range of 4.50%-4.75% at the conclusion of its monetary policy meeting. Last Friday proved volatile with the Labor Department’s blowout jobs report showing the U.S. economy added a seasonally adjusted 517,000 jobs in January from a month earlier, the largest gain since July and more than double the consensus forecast. Alongside the robust payroll gain, the unemployment rate dropped to 3.4% from December’s 3.5% hitting a level last seen in 1969.
